Women’s Volleyball Earns First-Ever Win Over Messiah, Clinches No. 2 Seed in MAC Commonwealth Championship

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's volleyball team took down conference rival Messiah on the road Wednesday night, 3-1. The win clinched the No. 2 seed for the Knights in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Championship; it was also the program's first-ever win over the Falcons.

  • "I'm super proud of our women tonight," said head coach Eli Porr. "They just dug deep and went for it and we got the result we wanted. We have been working hard on being resilient and being known as a team that has some grit. We are excited to keep pushing forward and see how far we can take things."
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Scarlet and Grey improved to 17-9 on the season and 6-1 in MAC Commonwealth action
  • The Falcons now sit at 13-13 overall and 4-2 in conference play
SET SCORES:
  • 27-25, 14-25, 25-20, 25-20
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In what was a back-and-forth opening set, the Knights staved off match-point twice before junior Lizzie Joseph tallied the last three kills of the set to give Arcadia the 27-25 win.
  • Messiah slowly chipped away at the second set using short chunks of scoring runs
  • The teams traded the first eight points of the third set, before the Knights started slowly increasing its lead. Arcadia took control with a 9-3 run to jump in front by a score of 21-15.
  • Each team had a run early in the fourth set before things settled down to back-and-forth scoring. The Knights scored the final three points of the match, capped off by an ace from sophomore Emily Eng.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore Shannon Ryan tied a match-high with 14 kills, while adding three blocks
  • Freshman Maddie Serht hit 73.3% on the night with 11 kills on 15 attempts
  • Joseph totaled 10 kills
  • Freshman Julia Paliwodzinski led all players with 42 assists
  • Eng registered a match-best 19 digs
  • The Knights scored 64 points on 52 kills, four aces and eight blocks
  • Messiah scored 67 points on 55 kills, nine aces and three blocks
NOTES:
  • Junior Becca Campf recorded three block assists; she now sits in third place all-time with 81 in her career
  • Arcadia has won three straight matches
STILL TO COME:
  • The Knights travel to Salisbury this weekend for a tri-match with the Seagulls and Penn State Harrisburg
  • Arcadia wraps up conference play October 26 vs Widener
  • As the No. 2 seed, the Knights will host the tournament's No. 3 seed on November 1.
