Josh Scott led the Arcadia University men's basketball team to its first MAC Commonwealth win of the season Saturday night, 78-69, over Stevenson. Both Davis and Scott dropped 21 points to lead all players, while two other Knights reached double figures.
FOR THE RECORD:
- The Scarlet and Grey improved to 4-5 on the season, and 1-2 in MAC Commonwealth play.
- The Mustangs dropped to 5-4 on the year with a 1-3 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Knights were hot from the start, hitting their first three field goal attempts, including threes from Scott and senior Brandon Thompson, as they scored the game's first eight points.
- The visitors battled back to tie the game at 11 with just under seven minutes in before six different players scored for Arcadia over a 21-9 run over the next 8:34 to open a 32-20 lead. Junior Evan Slone led the team with eight points over that span, including back-to-back layups to cap it.
- Arcadia took a 36-31 lead to the break, however at the halftime buzzer Stevenson was in the midst of a big run that ended in a 39-36 Mustang lead just over two and half minutes into the second frame.
- A 22-9 run followed for the Knights over the next 12:02. Davis kicked off the spurt with a layup for two of his eight points in the run. In total five Knights made a bucket.
- After junior Phil Pierfy capped the 22-9 run to put the Knights in front 58-51 with 5:35 left on the clock, each team shot 3-5 from the floor in a neck-and-neck final 5:26. Pierfy led all players with nine points down the stretch.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Davis' career-high 21 points came on 9-11 shooting from the floor and 3-4 from the free throw line. The Philadelphia native added four rebounds and three assists.
- Scott was a 7-12 shooter on the day, including 2-4 from long range, along with going 5-5 at the charity stripe. He added seven rebounds and three assists on the offensive end, while registering a steal on defense.
- Pierfy and Slone each shot 5-11 from the floor while scoring 16 and 10 points, respectively. Pierfy led all players with eight rebounds.
- As a team, Arcadia shot 45.3% (29-64) from the floor, including 5-15 (33.3%) from beyond the arc, and converted 15-18 (83.3%) at the line.
- The Knights outrebounded the opposition 44-27 on the day, including 15-4 on the offensive glass. That margin led to a 17-4 differential in second chance points in favor of Arcadia.
- Arcadia dominated the paint to the beat of 40 points compared to Stevenson's 16.
NOTES:
- The win snaps a four-game losing streak for Arcadia.
- This mark's Davis' first career 20+-point game, besting his previous career-high of 19 set against Lewis & Clark.
- Scott has reached double figures in three straight games.
- Arcadia has beaten the Mustangs five straight times
