GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Knights defended their home court Saturday as the Arcadia University men's volleyball team posted victories over visiting Brooklyn College and New Jersey City University Saturday to close out the 2017 Knight Classic.
FOR THE RECORD: The Knights improved to 7-7 for the season with today's wins. The Bulldogs are now 5-5 this season, including today's loss to St. Joseph's (L.I), while the Gothic Knights fell to 2-7 with its losses to Arcadia and No. 15 Nazareth.
ARCADIA 3, BROOKLYN 0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-21)
HOW IT HAPPENED: Arcadia dominated the first two games against Brooklyn, using a pair of early 6-0 runs to open a 14-3 lead in the opener on its way to a 25-10 win and utilizing an 11-2 run to go up 12-4 in the second on its way to a 15-15 win. The Knights led 8-3 in the early stages of the third game and led 22-14 before the Bulldogs used a five-point surge to close within three, 22-19. The teams traded points the rest of the way for the 25-21 final.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Freshman
Edwin Waters Jr. led the way with a match-high nine kill while hitting .389, while fellow freshman
Jason Manley hit .636 with eight kills and one error on 11 attempts. Classmates
Austin Braas and
Bryce Galloway added seven kills each while hitting .667 and .500, respectively; Braas also tallied a match-high five blocks. Senior
Sean Cohen handed out 31 assists with three blocks and three digs.
BROOKLYN LEADERS: Vaughn Titus also had a match-high nine kills to lead the Bulldogs, while Ahmed Moawad was second with five. Snigdho Hassan notched a match-high eight digs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Arcadia hit an impressive .479 as a team while outscoring Brooklyn 57-25. The Bulldogs hit just .045 for the match.
ARCADIA 3, New Jersey City 1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-14)
HOW IT HAPPENED: Arcadia got off to a slow start as the two teams traded points the whole way in the first game, which saw NJCU score three of the final four points to squeeze out a 25-23 win. The Knights won each of the following two games by identical counts of 25-21, holding off a late charge by New Jersey City in the second and closing out the third with five unanswered points. The fourth game was 12-11 in NJCU's favor before Arcadia went on a 10-0 run with Braas serving to take control of the deciding game, eventually winning 25-14.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Braas hit .429 with a match-high 12 kills and three errors on 21 swings to go with three blocks and three aces, while Manley posted a double-double with his match-high totals of 12 kills and 11 digs. Waters added eight kills and five blocks, while freshman
Robie Moctezuma hit .583 with seven kills in 12 attempts while recording a match-high seven blocks. Cohen handed out a 44 assists with three kills and five digs.
NEW JERSEY CITY LEADERS: Julian Moreira led the Gothic Knights with 10 kills and eight digs, while J.J. Berdecia added seven kills with seven digs. Jimmy Vega had 29 assists in the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Knights hit .214 in the match despite hitting just .083 in the opening game, and outscored NJCU 67-39 for the match. The Gothic Knights put up a negative hitting number after totaling 29 kills and 30 errors.
