Baseball Team Takes Two from Swarthmore to Open 2017 Season

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Bryan Torresani era got off to a good start Saturday at Erny Field as the Arcadia University baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader from visiting Swarthmore College. It was the first two games of the year for both squads.

GAME 1: ARCADIA 4, SWARTHMORE 3

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights got off to a fast start as senior Jordan Draude drove in a pair of runs with his single to center field, scoring classmate Justin Chasmar from third and sophomore Bryan Gillen from second. Swarthmore got on the board when Cole Beeker scored on a sac-fly in the top of the fourth, and tied the game in the top of the sixth as Beeker drove a double to center field to plate Ryan Burnett.

The Garnet took the lead in the sixth as Holden Bridge scored on Conor Elliott's single to center field, but that lead didn't last long as the Knights scored twice in the bottom of the frame for the 4-3 final. Junior Pat Shevlin doubled to center field to plate sophomore Nick Ponente with the game-tying run before scoring on a throwing error by catcher Kenji Yoshi after stealing third.

ON THE HILL: Junior Connor Laigaie picked up the win after getting the final out of the sixth in relief of classmate Mike Boulanger, who allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts over his 5.2 innings of work. Senior Chris Keesser picked up the save with a scoreless seventh. Ricky Conti took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits in 5.2 innings of work.

ARCADIA AT THE PLATE: Draude was 1 for 3 with a single and a pair of RBI, while Shevlin finished 1 for 3 with a double, and RBI and a run scored. Chasmar and Gillen accounted for Arcadia's other two hits in the game and scored one run each.

SWARTHMORE AT THE PLATE: Charles Levitt was 3 for 4 with two doubles from the leadoff spot, while Beeker was 2 for 3 with two doubles, one run scored and another driven in.

GAME 2, ARCADIA 10, SWARTHMORE 4

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights staked themselves to a 6-1 lead after scoring three times in the bottom of the second inning and twice in the bottom of the third, which saw two runs score on Ponente's single to center in the second, and RBI-singles from Chasmar in the second and sophomore Luke Hohenstein in the third. The Garnet got back in the game with three runs in the top of the fifth, two of which scored on Jared Gillen's one-out, base-loaded single to center that cut Arcadia's lead to 6-4. He was then thrown out by Draude attempting to steal second before Elliott flied out to end the inning.

Arcadia once again answered with in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four times to put the game out of reach. Freshman Zak Thomas scored on a failed pickoff from third with the bases loaded before Chasmar plated Bryan Gillen and junior Drew Coisson with a triple to the gap in right-center field. Chasmar then scored on the final run of the game on a perfectly executed squeeze play by Ponente.

ON THE HILL: Senior Joseph Warren picked up the win after allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in his four-plus innings of work. Junior Jake Lloyd allowed just one hit while fanning three batters over the final two innings of play. Sawyer Lake took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits and three walks in two innings, while Ryan Warm allowed six runs on six hits in his four innings on the mound.

ARCARDIA AT THE PLATE: Chasmar went 2 for 4 with a triple, four RBI and two runs scored in the second game of the day, while Coisson was 3 for 3 with three singles and two runs scored. Ponente was 1 for 2 with a walk and three RBI, while Hohenstein finished 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.

SWARTHMORE AT THE PLATE: Jared Gillen was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and drove in two runs, while Beeker was also two for 3 with two singles, and RBI and a stolen base. Levitt was 1 for 4 with a run scored and two steals.
