Baseball Team Runs Winning Streak to Four Games with 4-3 Win over Marietta

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Arcadia University baseball team held off a late rally attempt by Marietta College to record a 4-3 victory Tuesday morning at North Charlotte Regional Park.

FOR THE RECORD: The Knights improved to 8-2 this season with their fourth straight win. The Pioneers, who are receiving votes in this week's D3Baseball.com Poll after being ranked 18th a week ago, fell to 3-3 with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Marietta got on the board first as Chandler Palyas drove an RBI triple to right field to score Seamus Kenneally in the top of the third before heading home as Mike Hale reached base on a fielder's choice. That lead didn't last long as Arcadia pushed three runs across in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Bryan Gillen scored from on an error resulting from a failed pickoff attempt at first base, and senior Justin Chasmar scored on sophomore Luke Hohenstein's single to center field to tie the game at 2-2. Hohenstein advanced to second on the throw home and scored on freshman Phil Pierfy's single to right-center field.

The Knights added what proved to be the game-winning run two innings later when junior Nick Cardace scored from third on an error after sending a double to the center with one out in the frame; there where two outs in the frame when the run scored, but instead of throwing to first after fielding a grounder pitcher Kordell Antill sailed his throw home to the backstop. Marietta got run back in the eighth before stranding the tying run at second.

ON THE HILL: Senior Joseph Warren fanned nine batters over his 7.1 innings of work to earn the win on the mound, improving his record to 2-0 this season. Junior Ryan Ulrich recorded an out against the only batter he faced in relief before senior Chris Keesser entered the game and struck out Shane Fetsko with a runner on second to end the threat. He then fanned two of the four batters he faced in the ninth to complete his second save of the year. James Angel fell to 0-1 after giving up three runs on four hits in his 3.2 innings of work for the Pioneers.

ARCADIA AT BAT: Gillen went 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored from the leadoff spot, while Chasmar was 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. Hohenstein finished 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

MARIETTA AT BAT: Palyas was 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored, accounting for one-third of the Pioneers' hits. Kenneally was 1 for 2 with a run scored, while Eric White was 1 for 2 with an RBI.
