Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Stevenson with Two Home Wins

PHILADELPHIA – The Arcadia University baseball team, which is receiving votes in this week's D3Baseball.com/NCBWA Poll, won both ends of Saturday's MAC Commonwealth doubleheader against visiting Stevenson University at Erny Field, winning game-one 12-6 before freshman Andrew Scholz tossed a complete game shutout in a 3-0 game-two win.

FOR THE RECORD: The Knights improved to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in the MAC Commonwealth with the two wins, which give them a 3-0 series sweep against the Mustangs. Stevenson fell to 6-12 overall and 1-5 in conference play with the two losses.

GAME ONE: ARCADIA 12, STEVENSON 6

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights put up at least one run in five of the six innings they came to bat in the opener, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on the first collegiate homerun for freshman Phil Pierfy. The game was tied at 3-3 going into the fourth, where junior Drew Coisson scored on an error to put Arcadia in front for good.

The Knights exploded for six runs in the fifth to go up 10-3, which included an RBI-single through the right side of the infield for Pierfy and a two-RBI single to left from sophomore Luke Hohenstein. Sophomore Sean Carew plated Pierfy from third that inning after a successful squeeze play, and then launched a two-run homer to left, the first of his collegiate career, to put Arcadia up 12-5 through six innings.

ON THE HILL: Junior Mike Boulanger (1-3) picked up his first win of the season after giving up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts over his three innings of relief work. Zach Kaye (1-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs (four earned) on seven hits over his four-plus innings of work.

ARCADIA AT BAT: Pierfy went 3 for 4 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored in the game, while Hohenstein was 2 for 4 with two RBI and a runs scored. Carew was 1 for 1 with a homer and three RBI.

STEVENSON AT BAT: Brady Kessler was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI, while John D'Aquanno was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Kevin Kopas was 1 for 1 with a double, three walks and two runs scored.

GAME TWO: ARCADIA 3, STEVENSON 0

HOW IT HAPPENED: The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel between Scholz (3-0) and Stevenson's James Wiercinski (1-3), both of whom went the distance. Scholz recorded the first shutout of his collegiate career while fanning nine batters, while Wiercinski allowed just one earned run while striking out six.

Coisson drove in the only two runs Arcadia would need with his double down the right field line that plated sophomore Nick Ponente and freshman Tyler Wisnewski in the bottom of the second. Arcadia's third and final run came an inning later as senior Justin Chasmar lifted a sacrifice fly to left that allowed classmate Jordan Draude to score from third.

ARCADIA AT BAT: Sophomore Bryan Gillen had the only multi-hit game for the Knights, going 2 for 2 with a pair of singles. Coisson was 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI, while Draude was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

STEVENSON AT BAT: Connor Wasilnak was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles, accounting for two of the Mustangs' five hits in the game. Kopas was 1 for 1 with a single and also reached on a pair of walks.
