GLENSIDE, Pa. – Sophomore
Kristin Cancelliere doubled to center in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Arcadia University softball team to a 3-2 win over Alvernia in the second game of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader Thursday afternoon on Blankley Field. The Crusaders took the opener 3-1. The Knights improved to 16-8 on the season and 6-4 in the MAC Commonwealth, while Alvernia moved to 15-11 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
GAME 2: ARCADIA 3, ALVERNIA 2 (10 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED: Runs were hard to come by in the day's second game. Sophomore
Jackie Bilotti gave the Knights an early lead when she scored as freshman
Mary Pat Murray reached on a fielding error by the shortstop in the bottom of the first inning. Alvernia got the run back in the top of the sixth when Bernadette Carey scored from third on an error by the catcher on a failed pickoff attempt.
With the score still tied at one heading into the 10th inning, the game entered the international tiebreaker. Morgan Psiuk served as the lead runner for the Crusaders. Psiuk moved from second to third on a sac bunt from Alexandria Maher before scoring when Taylor Thomas reached on a fielder's choice.
With junior
Kaylee Zarick placed on second as the lead runner, the Knights came out swinging in the bottom of the 10th. Junior
Marissa Mancinelli moved Zarick to third by reaching on a fielder's choice to lead off the frame. Bilotti plated Zarick with a single to tie the game and advanced to second as Mancinelli was thrown out at third. That brought up Cancelliere with one out and a runner on second. That's when the Rocky Hill, Connecticut native sent a 2-0 pitch to center field to plate Bilotti for the game winning run.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Bilotti and Cancelliere each went 3-5 with an RBI in the game, with the former hitting two triples and scoring two runs and the latter recording a double and a stolen base. Freshman
Ashley Eckett went 2-2, with classmate
Tori Zangrilli registering one base knock.
ALVERNIA LEADERS: JoAnnah Lim and Sarah Bystrycki each had two-hit games, with Brianna DePriest and McKenzie Miessau each registering one hit.
IN THE CIRCLE: Sophomore
Kayla Resh (3-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing two innings of relief allowing one unearned run on one hit. Freshman
Mary Pat Murray got the start, throwing eight innings and allowing one unearned run on five hits with three strikeouts. Riley Shields (5-4) took the loss in relief allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Brittany Brown started the game, allowing one unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work.
GAME 1: ALVERNIA 3, ARCADIA 1
HOW IT HAPPENED: The teams took a scoreless tie to the seventh inning until the visitors plated three in the top of the frame. Maher drove in Carey with a single through the right side for the first run of the game. Three batters later, DePriest sent a sac fly to left to plate Psiuk before a Bystrycki single up the middle brought home Maher two batters later.
Junior
Amanda Hess led off the bottom of the frame with a triple to right on the first pitch she saw before scoring on a single down the left field line by Zangrilli.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Cancelliere, Hess, Zangrilli and Zarick all registered a hit for Arcadia.
ALVERNIA LEADERS: DePriest, Bystrycki, Psiuk, Maher and Analise Fouracre all had a hit for the Crusaders. DePreist, Bystrycki and Psiuk each drove in one run.
IN THE CIRCLE: Freshman
Kylee Schwind (7-5) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Resh struckout one and gave up one hit in 0.1 innings of action. Shields earned the win allowing one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings of work.
