Bats Explode for 19 Runs as Softball Sweeps Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team plated 19 runs in a road sweep of Misericordia Monday afternoon. The Knights improved to 18-8 on the season, while the Cougars fell to 11-15.
 
GAME 1: ARCADIA 10, MISERICORDIA 2 (6 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights scored early and often in the opener, plating at least one run in each of the first four innings. A two-out double to right center in the top of the first from freshman Tori Zangrilli scored classmate Mary Pat Murray from first to open the scoring, before junior Nicole Iasiello singled to left to drive in Zangrilli for an early 2-0 Arcadia lead.
 
More two-out magic happened in the top of the second as sophomore Jackie Bilotti brought freshman Bekah Good home from second with a single up the middle, before crossing the plate herself on a sophomore Kristin Cancelliere double one batter later. With a full count, Zangrilli led off the top of the third with her first career home run to lift the Scarlet and Grey to a 5-0 advantage.
 
After three of the first four batters reached base to start the top of the fourth, Murray singled through the left side to plate Bilotti from second and junior Kaylee Zarick from third. Two batters later, Iasiello reached on an error by the third baseman that allowed Cancelliere to score from third.
 
A two-run home run from Victoria Schmidt got the Cougars on the board in the bottom of the fifth, however the Knights got those runs right back in the top of the sixth. Freshman Julia Gessner singled to center to score Murray, who led the frame off with a double, from third. Two batters later, Zarick reached on an error by the third baseman to allowed Iasiello to score the game's final run.
 
ARCADIA AT THE PLATE: Bilotti and Murray each went 3-4 in the game with two runs scored, while Zangrilli and Iasiello had 2-4 outings along with a 2-3 game from Zarick. Murray and Zangrilli drove in two runs each, with Bilotti, Cancelliere, Iasiello and Gessner driving in one.
 
MISERICORDIA AT THE PLATE: Abby Marzzacco led the Cougars by going 2-3 in the leadoff spot. Schmidt and Jessica Pluta each had one hit.
IN THE CIRCLE: Freshman Kylee Schwind (8-5) earned the win for Arcadia, allowing two runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in six innings of work. Brooke Moyle (4-7) got the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) with a walk and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of action. Jordan Hoffman threw 2.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits.
 
GAME 2: ARCADIA 9, MISERICORDIA 5
HOW IT HAPPENED: Zarick got the scoring started in the nightcap by sending a two-out, 2-2 pitch to right center for a triple that brought Gessner home from first. The hosts got that run back in the bottom of the fourth, when Lori Brennan grounded out to shortstop allowing Alexis D'Amico to score from third.
 
Arcadia took control in the top of the fifth, adding six runs to its side of the scoreboard. The first three batters of the inning reached for the Knights, before Murray singled on a one-out, 1-0 pitch to bring home Zarick and sophomore Kayla Resh; Bilotti advanced to third on the play while Murray moved to second on the throw. The next batter, Zangrilli, continued her strong day at the plate with an RBI single to plate Bilotti and move Murray to third. A passed ball with two outs allowed Murray to score and Zangrilli to advance to second before freshman Sara Shelton walked to set up a two-out situation for Gessner with runners on first and second. The frosh brought both runners home with a double to right field to end the inning's scoring.
 
Back-to-back RBI singles with one out in the bottom of the inning allowed Misericordia to pull within a 7-3 margin before an error by the center fielder allowed another run to score for the Cougars in the bottom of the sixth. The Knights tacked on two more in the top of the seventh before the scoring closed with a run in the bottom of the frame from the hosts.
 
ARCADIA AT THE PLATE: Zangrilli went 3-3 in the contest with an RBI and two runs scored. Murray and Gessner each had two hits while scoring once and driving in two.
 
MISERICORDIA AT THE PLATE: The Cougars were led by a 3-3 outing from Taylor Kenerson, while D'Amico and Brennan each had a pair of hits. Kenerson and D'Amico each scored twice.
 
IN THE CIRCLE: Murray moved to 7-2 on the season, as she threw throw four innings allowing one unearned run on four hits with two strikeouts. Resh tossed three innings of relief, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in three innings of work. Schmidt took the loss for Misericordia, allowing seven runs (three earned) with five walks and two strikeouts. Maddie Stebich threw 2.1 innings in relief allowing two runs on two hits with two walks.
