Softball Clinches Playoff Berth with Sweep of Lycoming

GLENSIDE, Pa.- The Arcadia University softball team clinched a spot in the MAC Commonwealth Championship with a pair of wins over Lycoming Sunday afternoon on Blankley Field. The Knights took game one 2-1, before junior Nicole Iasiello plated freshman Julia Gessner on a single down the left field line in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 6-5 win in game two. The Scarlet and Grey improved to 20-10 on the season and 8-6 in the MAC Commonwealth, while the Warriors fell to 18-14 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
 
GAME ONE: ARCADIA 2, LYCOMING 1
HOW IT HAPPENED: Both Arcadia runs scored in a single at-bat in the bottom of the first inning, as freshman Mary Pat Murray sent a 3-2, one-out pitch up the middle to plate sophomore Jackie Bilotti from third and junior Amanda Hess from second. Bilotti led off the game with a walk, before Hess singled through the left side two batters later.
 
The Knights' 2-0 lead stood until the top of the sixth inning, when Morgan Kunes sent a two-out, 1-1 offering down the right field line to plate Madison Brown from first base.
 
ARCADIA AT THE PLATE: Hess led the Arcadia offense, going 2-3 at the plate with a double, run scored and a stolen base. Murray went 1-3 in the game with two-RBI.
 
LYCOMING AT THE PLATE: Brown, Kunes, Ashley Schoenstadt and Kelcie Crabb each went 1-3 in the game.
 
IN THE CIRCLE: Freshman Kylee Schwind improved to 9-6 on the season, allowing one run over seven innings with a walk and seven strikeouts. Rachel Shady (10-8) allowed two runs on three hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.
 
GAME 2: ARCADIA 6, LYCOMING 5 (10 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED: Lycoming opened the scoring in the second game, as Schoenstadt singled up the middle to plate two runs with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Tori Zangrilli got the Knights on the board with a two-out RBI double to right in the bottom half of the inning before Gessner plated her with a single up the middle in the next at-bat.
 
Two more runs crossed the plate in the top of the sixth for the Warriors with Schoenstadt doubling to left center to score Brown before Kelcie Crabb doubled down the left field line in the next at-bat to plate Schoenstadt. A Zangrilli double to left plated Murray in the bottom of the sixth before Hess brought home Bilotti with an RBI single in the seventh to send the game to extras.
 
The game stayed tied at four until the international tiebreak rule came into effect in the 10th inning. The Warriors plated their lead runner when Cayla Treaster singled up the middle, before the next two batters popped out to end the inning.
 
Junior Marissa Mancinelli pinch ran for Zangrilli, the runner placed on second as part of the international tiebreak rule, to start the inning. She scored on the innings first at-bat as Gessner laid down a bunt single before advancing to third on a throwing error by the third baseman. Iasiello plated Gessner in the next at-bat to win the game.
 
ARCADIA AT THE PLATE: Bilotti, Zangrilli, Gessner and sophomore Kristin Cancelliere all registered two hits in the game. Zangrilli led the way with two doubles and two RBI.
 
LYCOMING AT THE PLATE: Schoenstadt led the Warriors going 3-4 with three RBI, a double and run scored. Seven other players recorded one hit each.
 
IN THE CIRCLE: Schwind picked up her second win of the day and 10th of the season, throwing one shutout inning in relief. Murray got the start allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts in nine innings of work. Liz Nace (4-3) took the loss allowing six runs (one earned) on 11 hits with two walks.
