WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team closed out the regular season with a sweep of King's Tuesday afternoon, taking game one 4-0 before winning the nightcap 11-2. The Knights closeout the regular season with a 27-11 record, while the Monarchs end their regular season at 17-17.
GAME ONE: ARCADIA 4, KING'S 0
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights struck early in the opener, putting up three runs in the first two innings. Freshman
Mary Pat Murray drove in the first run in the top of the first when she singled up the middle to bring in junior
Amanda Hess, who reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher in the previous at-bat.
It took just two batters in the second for Arcadia to score again. Freshman
Julia Gessner led the inning off with a double to left center before junior
Nicole Iasiello singled to left field in the next at-bat. After moving to third on Iasiello's single, Gessner crossed the plate courtesy of a throwing error by the left fielder. Two batters later, with Iasiello on third following a sac bunt by from junior
Kaylee Zarick, sophomore
Kayla Resh hit a sac fly to the shortstop to that brought in the third run.
The Knights drew three straight walks in the top of the sixth to chase starting pitcher Kristina Kocher. Gessner was the first batter to face new pitcher Mikayla Hoskins, putting the ball in play immediately and reaching on a fielder's choice that allowed Hess to score from third.
ARCADIA AT THE PLATE: Iasiello went 2-3 with a run scored for Arcadia, while Bilotti, Murray, Gessner and Resh each recorded a base knock. Murray, Gessner and Resh had one RBI each.
KING'S AT THE PLATE: Taylor Norris and Lexi Wolk had a single each for the Monarchs.
IN THE CIRCLE: Freshman
Kylee Schwind moved to 13-7 on the season, throwing four innings and allowing two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Resh threw three hitless innings in relief to pick up the save while walking two and striking out one. Kocher (6-5) took the loss allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings of work. Hoskins struck out one in two scoreless innings of relief.
GAME 2: ARCADIA 11, KING'S 2
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knight offense started its work in the top of the second inning when senior
Samantha Quigley sent a one out offering to right field for an RBI single that plated Gessner from second. Two batters later, Bilotti matched Quigley with an RBI single to left of her own that brought home Iasiello, who reached on an error by the second baseman. The hosts got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out RBI single by Amber Saylor.
In the span of just two at-bats in the top of the third, the Scarlet and Grey tacked on four more runs. With one out, Murray singled through the left side, before classmate
Tori Zangrilli doubled to left to bring Gessner to the dish with runners on second and third. The frosh proceeded to send a double to left center to drive in both runners, before Iasiello sent a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Knights a 6-1 lead.
Three more runs crossed the plate in the top of the sixth for Arcadia. Hess singled through the left side to plate Resh from third with one out two batters before Bilotti came home on a wild pitch. In the same at-bat Bilotti scored on, Zangrilli sent a sac fly to right field that allowed Hess to come home. Taylor Norris plated Wolk with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth for the Monarchs, before Murray capped the scoring with a two-RBI double to center field in the top of the seventh.
ARCADIA AT THE PLATE: Bilotti went 4-5 from the leadoff spot, with an RBI and run scored. Murray (2-4), Gessner (2-2) and Iasiello (1-3) each had two RBI. Hess crossed the plate twice and drove in one as she went 3-5.
KING'S AT THE PLATE: Saylor, Wolk and Ally DeVoir each had two-hit games for the Monarchs, while Norris and Megan Beaupre each had one hit. Saylor and Norris each recorded an RBI.
IN THE CIRCLE: Murray (11-3) picked up the win for Arcadia, throwing six innings and allowing one unearned run on five hits with 10 strikeouts. Resh allowed one unearned run on three hits in one inning of relief. Kayla Paszek (1-6) took the loss for King's, allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
