Women’s Volleyball Goes 1-1 at Battlefield Classic to Start 2017 Season

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Arcadia University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at Gettysburg's Battlefield Classic Friday afternoon, defeating Bethany 3-0 after falling to the Host Bullets 3-1 to open the 2017 season.

ARCADIA 3, BETHANY 0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-20)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Knights dominated the opening game, opening a 19-3 lead on their way to a 25-10 win. Arcadia took and early 10-4 lead in the second following a kill from freshman Allison Elechko and maintained that advantage until a 3-1 burst brought Bethany back within three, 23-20. Junior Katie Wilson answered with a kill that was followed by a Bison error for the 25-20 final the gave Arcadia a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Knights appeared poised to run away with the third game after junior Lizzie Joseph's kill gave Arcadia an early 8-1 lead, but Bethany was able close the gap to one after Reilly Parker's service ace made it 21-20 in favor of Arcadia. The Bison's momentum was halted there as the committed two straight errors to set up freshman Julia Paliwodzinski's game and match-winning ace.

ARCADIA LEADERS: Elechko and Joseph led the Knights with eight kills each; Joseph hit .500 for the match after totaling her eight kills on 16 attempts. Junior Becca Campf hit .455 with five kills on 11 swings to go with six digs, while freshman Lauren Enfield totaled six kills and eight digs. Paliwodzinski had 17 assists with six digs.

BETHANY LEADERS: Jenna Scott had a team-best six kills, while Katie Sparks totaled five kills and 12 digs. Parker led the team with a match-high 15 digs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The Knights outscored the Bison 44-29 in the match, hitting .228 as a team with totals of 33 kills and 12 attack errors. Bethany hit just .031 for the match, totaling 25 kills and 22 attack errors.

GETTYSBURG, 3, ARCADIA 1(22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Arcadia never trailed in game one, using a late 6-1 run to open a 21-15 following a kill from Campf before holding on for the 25-22 win. A late three-point run brought the Knights back within one, 23-22, of a tightly contested second game, but they were unable to come all the way back as two straight points for Gettysburg gave it the 25-22 win, tying the match at 1-1.

The Bullets led 17-15 before outscoring Arcadia 8-3, which included each of the final four points of the third set it 25-18 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. The two teams went back and forth throughout the fourth game, which saw the Knights within 22-21 before a pair of errors and a kills from Maddie Weikert gave Gettysburg a 25-21 win in the game and a 3-1 win in the match.

ARCADIA LEADERS: Campf, Enfield and sophomore Shannon Ryan totaled eight kills each to lead a balances Arcadia offense. Joseph was close behind, totaling six kills with nine digs. Paliwodzinski handed out 18 assists with eight digs, while senior Colleen Stengel notched 15 assists.

GETTYSBURG LEADERS: Allie Stranick led the way for the Bullets with 13 kills and 12 digs, while Weikert registered 12 kills and seven digs. Stephanie Blair handed out 42 assists, while Katherine Gilbert totaled 20 digs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Gettysburg hit .225 in the match, totaling 50 kills to 19 errors while outscoring Arcadia 60-53. The Knights hit .096 while totaling 39 kills and 26 attack errors.

UP NEXT: The Knights will close out the Battlefield Classic Saturday with matches against Penn State Altoona (noon) and Maywood (2 p.m.).
