Women’s Volleyball Opens Knight Invitational with Wins over Washington, New Rochelle

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's volleyball team open its own Knight Invitational Friday night by picking up a pair of wins. The Knights downed Washington College (Md.) 3-0 to open the tournament, before claiming a 3-1 triumph over New Rochelle in the nightcap.
 
FOR THE RECORD: The Scarlet and Grey improved to 10-3 on the year. The Shorewomen moved to 11-2 as they also downed SUNY Canton; while the Blue Angels fell to 7-5.
 
ARCADIA 3, WASHINGTON 0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-15)
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights opened the first set by scoring 10 of the first 15 points. A six-point run capped by an ace from sophomore Emily Eng put Arcadia in control en route to a 25-13 set win. Set two saw the Knights pick up right where they left off, scoring the first six points including a pair of aces from freshman Lauren Enfield. With a 12-10 lead, sophomore Shannon Ryan recorded two kills as part of a four-point spurt before clinching the set 25-20 with a kill on an assist from Eng.
 
Set three started off with back-and-forth action, before the Knights rattled of an 11-2 run to break the set open with a 17-9 lead. Freshman Miranda Baronett sealed the win with an ace.
 
ARCADIA LEADERS: Ryan led all players with 11 kills, while Enfield chipped in match-highs in aces (3) and digs (11). Senior Colleen Stengel led the way with a match-best 23 assists. Upfront, junior Katie Wilson registered three block assists, while Eng had 10 digs and two aces from the back row.
 
WASHINGTON LEADERS: Abby Smith led the Shorewomen's attack with six kills and eight digs, while Taylor Horan handed out 16 assists. Olivia Portera matched the team-high with eight digs and tied a match-high with three aces.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Arcadia dominated the numbers game, outscoring Washington 47-28 with 32 digs and compared to 21 for the Shorewomen. The Knights hit 22.7% as a team on 88 total attempts. Washington hit 0.00% with 21 errors on 91 attempts.
 
ARCADIA 3, NEW ROCHELLE 1 (25-15, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16)
HOW IT HAPPENED: The match's first set started with a trade of small spurts. Trailing 8-6, Arcadia went on to score 12 of the next 16 points to jump out to a 17-13 lead. That margin would increase to 21-15, before Stengel finished off the set with back-to-back kills for a 25-15 decision for the Knights. The teams traded large runs to start the second set, as Arcadia jumped out to a 7-1 lead only to have the Blue Angels come back to tie the match at eight. A five-point rally behind the serve of Stengel put the Knights ahead for good at 22-19 before taking the set 25-22.
 
After New Rochelle forced a fourth set, the Knights opened a 15-7 lead on the heels of a 9-1 run behind strong serving from Baronett and classmate Allison Elechko. The Scarlet and Grey immediately answered a four-point swing in the other direction with one of its own to jump ahead 19-11, before taking the set 25-16.
 
ARCADIA LEADERS: Junior Lizzie Joseph registered a season-high 16 kills while hitting 53.8%. Freshman Maddie Sehrt was a 38.9% hitter with eight kills on 18 attempts. Stengel once again led the way with 37 assists, while Eng posted 13 digs. Baronett chipped in eight digs.
 
NEW ROCHELLE LEADERS: The Blue Angels' attack was led by Cristal Liciaga's 11 kills, while Imani DeBose contributed nine. Melanie Lopez Soto handed out 19 assists, while Fabiola Padilla recorded a match-high 19 digs.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Arcadia outscored New Rochelle 62-42, while recording 49 kills compared to the Blue Angels' 31. The Knights also held the advantage in blocks (7-4), assists (46-31) and digs (52-51).
