GLENSIDE, Pa. – Freshman
Taylor Benton registered her first career goal in the 5
th minute to spark an 8-0 win for the Arcadia University field hockey team over Hood in its MAC Commonwealth opener Saturday afternoon on Jean Lenox West Field.
FOR THE RECORD: The Scarlet and Grey improved to 6-3 on the year, while starting conference play with a 1-0 record. The Blazers now sit at 2-6 overall and 0-1 on conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Benton's first collegiate tally, which was assisted by sophomore
Sydney Cyr, was the first of four goals Arcadia scored over the first 15 minutes of play. Roles reversed on the second goal of the day as Cyr found the back of the net off an insert from Benton in the 8
th minute. Just over a minute later, junior
Nicole Hassett collected the rebound from a blocked shot and found the back of the cage; sophomore
Adera Ahern netted her first goal of the year in the 15
th minute. First half scoring ended with a double assist off a corner as Ahern inserted to Cyr who passed over to freshman
Lauren Dougherty on the left side of the circle for the goal in the 19
th minute. The Knights put six more shots on cage in the half.
Junior
Gabby Sedares scored the first two goals of the second half with the first off an assist from classmate
Kayla Brennan in the 40
th minute before converting a penalty stroke in the 43
rd minute. Freshman
Michaela Ferlow capped the scoring in the 49
th minute with her first career tally off an assist from Ahern.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Sedares led the offense with two goals and an assist, while Ahern and Cyr had a goal and two assists each. Benton chipped in a goal and an assist. Dougherty, Ferlow and Hassett each found the back of the cage once, while Brennan handed out an assist.
IN GOAL: Freshman
Maya Stern (6-3) picked up the win for Arcadia, while Hailey Poisal took the loss for Hood while allowing eight goals and making 13 saves.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Just as hot as the offense was, putting 21 of 25 shots on cage, the defense was just as hot as it held with Blazers without a shot for the entire game. The Knights also took 20 penalty corners, while Hood took none.
