Hammer Nets Overtime Winner as Men’s Soccer Downs Hood in Conference Opener

FREDRICK, Md. – Junior Ryan Hammer poked the game-winning goal past the keeper in the 100th minute to lift the Arcadia University men's soccer team to 2-1 win over Hood Saturday afternoon.
 
FOR THE RECORD: The Knights improved to 7-1-1 on the year and are off to a 1-0 start in MAC Commonwealth play. The Blazers fell to 6-5 on the year and start conference play at 0-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: Arcadia's first two shots went on target as junior Sam Hernandez and freshman Duncan O'Connor tested Hood's Danny Castillo a minute apart. Hammer sent a shot on target late in the opening half, but was denied to send the game to the break at a 0-0- tie.
 
O'Connor broke that tie early in the second half as he took a slot from Hammer in the 54th minute and put it past the keeper. Hammer had an opportunity to put the Knights up two in the 57th minute on a penalty kick but was denied. Hood knotted the game at one in the 69th minute on a goal from Cameron Tyler. The Blazers pushed the Arcadia defense in the waning minutes of the half, but the Knights' were up to the task as they prevented three shot attempts from reaching the goal.
 
Just one shot was needed in the extra session as Hammer poked in a through ball for the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Arcadia doubled up the hosts in shots on goal 8-4. Corner kicks were near even at 6-5 in favor of Hood. The Blazers committed 18 fouls in the game and were given three yellow cards, while Arcadia was whistled for 10 fouls and given two yellow cards.
 
IN GOAL: Senior Chris Watson made three saves in the win to move to 7-1-1 on the year. Castillo allowed two goals and made six saves in the loss.
