ASHLAND, Va. -- Emory & Henry held on to knock off the Arcadia women's basketball team 77-71 on Friday night in a neutral-site contest played at Randolph-Macon.
Caitlin Jensen led the Knights (1-2) with 19 points, while
Taylor Dunn and
Sydney Cyr each chipped in 15, and
Julia Makowski added 14.
The Knights jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the first quarter. Makowski scored five of the nine points, including a three pointer with for the early five-point lead with 7:19 remaining.
Emory & Henry (3-0) answered, going on a 6-2 run to cut the Knights' lead to just one (11-10) with 4:45 to play in the opening period.
Arcadia stretched its lead to five (20-15) after
Camille Menns converted a layup with an assist from Dunn with 2:10 remaining in the first.
Emory & Henry closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to even the score at 22-22 heading to the second.
A jumper by Cyr opened the scoring in the second quarter and gave the Knights a 24-22 lead. Later in the quarter, with Arcadia leading by one (27-26) with 7:16 left, the Wasps went on a 7-3 run to take a 33-30 lead with 4:48 left in the half. The Knights answered, closing the second quarter on a 9-4 run, in which Dunn scored four points during the stretch, giving the Knights a 39-37 lead at the break.
The second half began with each team exchanging three pointers, with Cyr hitting a three for the Knights to keep their two-point (42-40) lead with 8:46 remaining in the third. Later in the stanza, with the score tied at 43-43, Emory & Henry proceeded to go on a 11-4 run and take a seven-point lead (54-47) with 4:02 remaining in the period.
After Arcadia's deficit was stretched to ten, the Knights answered, closing the quarter on an 8-3 run which was capped by two Jenson free throws with 0:17 left to cut its deficit to four (61-57) heading to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, after the Wasps extended their lead to seven (67-60) with 7:05 to play, Arcadia cut its deficit to just one with a 6-0 run, which was capped by a three pointer by Dunn to make the score 67-66 with 6:33 to play.
The Knights were unable to even the score for the remainder of the contest, as the Wasps hung on for the victory.
Menns led the Knights with eight boards, while adding seven points. Cyr added five rebounds for the Scarlet & Grey. The Knights shot 32.4 percent from the field (22-68) in the contest, and shot 33.3 percent (5-15) from three-point range.
