Knights Comeback Effort Falls Short to Gwynedd Mercy

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Knights second half rally came up short as the Arcadia women's basketball team fell 77-65 to Gwynedd Mercy in the Battle of 309 on Tuesday evening in Alumni Gymnasium.
 
Courtney Hoffman paced the Knights (1-4) with 15 points, while Taylor Dunn scored 14 and had nine boards to finish one rebound shy of a double-double. Julia Makowski also finished just shy of a double-double, tallying 13 points and nine boards. All of Makowski's 13 points came in the second half.
 
Trailing by 13 (58-45) with 8:25 to play in the game, the Knights went on a 11-4 run over the next 3:20, with Makowski scoring eight straight points on four layups for the Knights over the span, to trail by eight (65-58) with 4:46 left on the clock.
 
Arcadia cut the Griffins' (2-2) lead to two with a 7-1 run over the next 1:37. Makowski completed a three-point play, which was followed by two free throws from Hoffman, to make the score 65-63 with 2:00 remaining.
 
Arcadia's comeback effort fell short however, as the Griffins converted free throws down the stretch, to take the victory.
 
In the first half, leading by six (13-7) with 4:52 left in the first quarter, Gwynedd Mercy closed the opening quarter on a 10-4 run, capped by a three at the buzzer from Denise Sacco, to tie the score at 17-17 heading into the second quarter.  
 
The Knights opened the second quarter on an 8-4 run, which was capped by a Courtney Hoffman layup, giving the Arcadia a 25-21 lead with 7:26 remanding in the first half. The Knights' run was answered by a 7-2 run from the Griffins, pulling Gwynedd Mercy ahead, 28-27 with 4:15 remaining in the second quarter. The Griffins ended the half on a 10-3 run, hitting another buzzer beater, this time from half court, taking a 42-34 lead at the break.
 
After the Griffins' extended their lead by as many as 15 in the third quarter, the Knights finished out the period on a 9-5 run, which began with a Hoffman layup and was capped by two free throws from Makowski. The Knights scored the final five points of the quarter, to cut Gwynedd Mercy's lead to 11, and make the score 56-45 heading to the fourth.
 
Camille Menns finished in double figures for the Knights, totaling 10 points and four boards. The Knights shot 31.7 percent (20-63) from the field in the contest. Arcadia went to the charity stripe 25 times in the game, with converting on 22 shots for an 88.0 free throw percentage as a team.
 
The Griffins were paced by Olivia Roseman, who netted 20 points, Sacco also scored 18 for Gwynedd Mercy.
 
Arcadia is back in action again on Sunday when the Knights host Wesley College at 1 p.m.
