GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia women's basketball team defeated Alvernia, 49-28 on Wednesday evening in Alumni Gymnasium.
Taylor Dunn led the Knights (4-4, 2-0 MACC) with 15 points and six rebounds.
Caitlin Jensen chipped in eight points, while
Sydney Cyr scored six points and grabbed six boards and
Julia Makowski grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Knights had suffocating defense in the first half. Arcadia shutout Alvernia (3-5, 0-3 MACC) 7-0 in the first quarter.
Camille Menns scored four of the seven points for the Knights in the stanza.
Arcadia expanded its lead in the second quarter. The Knights opened the period on a 6-0 run, which was capped by a
Jamie Manzo layup, giving Arcadia a 13-0 lead with 7:56 to play in the second quarter. Arcadia did not give up an Alvernia basket until 4:58 remaining in the half, when the Golden Wolves hit a three, making the score 13-3 in favor of the Knights.
Alvernia proceeded to cut the Knights' lead to six points after a 7-0 run made the score 13-7 with 1:48 left on the clock. Manzo hit a jumper with 24 seconds to play, giving Arcadia an eight-point lead (17-9) going into the break.
Arcadia began to distance itself from the Golden Wolves in the third quarter. The Knights extended their lead 11 (24-13) after beginning the period with a 9-4 run, that was capped by a three from Dunn with 5:03 remaining.
Still leading by 11 (26-15) with 3:34 left in the quarter, Arcadia scored eight unanswered points to stretch the lead to 19 (34-15) after Jensen it's a three with 1:00 left to play. The Knights led by 18 (34-16) heading to the fourth.
The Knights continued to stretch its lead in the final period. The Knights lead swelled to 23 with 6:31 to play, following two free throws from Jensen, making the score 41-20. Arcadia led by as many as 28 in the fourth, when Dunn completed a four-point play with 3:44 left, making the score 48-20. The Knights cruised from there, to take the victory.
Dunn hit a game-high four three pointers for the Knights in the win. Arcadia out rebounded the Golden Wolves, 51-35, and had as many offensive rebounds as Alvernia had defensive rebounds (23). The Knights made six three pointers in the win, all of which came in the second half of play. The Knights also held the Golden Wolves to just 9 of 49 (18.4 percent) from the field and 2 for 20 (10.0 percent) from beyond the arc in the victory
The Knights are back in action on Saturday at Lycoming, for a 1 p.m. tip.
