Four-Run Fifth, Three-Run Eighth Lead Baseball to Season-Opening Win Over Elizabethtown

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team opened the 2018 campaign with a 9-5 win over Elizabethtown. Junior Bryan Gillen and freshman Josh Fulmer each scored twice, while Fulmer and classmate Brett Moyer each drove in a pair of runs.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Scarlet and Grey open the season at 1-0.
  • The Blue Jays start 0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third, junior Luke Hohenstein got the Knights on the board with a sac fly to center field to plate Gillen, who led the frame off with a triple.
  • The Scarlet and Grey tacked on four more in the bottom of the fifth, starting with a two-RBI single from Moyer with the bases loaded. The next batter, junior Sean Carew, drove in senior Nick Cardace on a SAC bunt before Moyer scored on a single to center from junior Nick Ponente.
  • Arcadia took a 6-4 lead to the bottom of the eighth, until Fulmer plated Ponente and senior Drew Coisson with a one-out triple, before scoring one at-bat later.
ON THE HILL:
  • Junior Joel Bartoni picked up the win after throwing five innings of relief, allowing one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Sophomore Jeremy Sabathne got the start throwing two innings. Senior Connor Laigaie tossed two innings of relief.
  • Anthony Lippy took the loss for Elizabethtown, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits with one strikeout.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Gillen went 3-4 from the leadoff spot with a RBI and two runs scored. Hohenstein followed in the two-hole with a 2-4 outing, a RBI and run scored.
  • Fulmer debuted with a 2-4 showing that included two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Arcadia's nine runs came on 11 hits.

  • The Knights are back in action tomorrow afternoon at Swarthmore. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
