SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team fell to Swarthmore, 5-4, in walk-off fashion Tuesday afternoon. Senior
Nick Cardace and junior
Luke Hohenstein led the offense with two hits apiece, while junior
Bryan Gillen scored a pair of runs.
FOR THE RECORD:
- The Knights move to 1-1 on the young season.
- The Garnet start their season 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Scarlet and Grey struck first as Cardace singled through the left side in the game's third at-bat to plate the leadoff man, Gillen, from second.
- The hosts held a 3-1 lead following the second inning. The Knights got one run back in the top of the third, when Gillen scored as classmate Sean Carew reached on a one-out, bases-loaded fielder's choice.
- Following a leadoff walk from junior Nick Ponente in the top of the fourth inning, freshman Josh Fulmer sent a RBI triple to center field to tie the game at three. Later in the inning, sophomore Tyler Wisnewski put the Knights up 4-3 when he scored on a wild pitch.
- The Garnet tied the game at four in the bottom of the fifth inning, before plating the winning run with a one-out SAC fly to right field in the bottom of the ninth.
ON THE MOUND:
- Senior Mike Boulanger got the start, striking out seven over four innings of work. Sophomore Andrew Scholz took the loss in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
- Arcadia plated four runs (two earned) on five hits on Garnet starter Ryan Warm over the first four innings Ricky Conti picked up the win in relief, throwing five innings.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Gillen scored two runs, while Ponente and Wisnewski each crossed the plate once.
- Cardace, Carew and Fulmer each drove in a run.
UP NEXT:
- The Knights and Garnet and slated for a grudge match this Friday, March 2, in Arcadia's home debut. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
