PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Arcadia baseball team picked up its fourth-straight win Monday afternoon, 17-11, over Ohio Wesleyan. Trailing 8-5 heading into the eighth inning, the Scarlet and Grey plated seven runs in the top of the 8
th and five in the top of the ninth to pick up the come-from-behind win.
FOR THE RECORD:
- The Knights own a 5-1 record on the year.
- The Bishops fell to 1-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, sophomore Dylan Towey drove in sophomore Phil Pierfy from first with a double to left center field to get the Knights on the board.
- The Knights scored in each of the final five innings of the frame, beginning with freshman Brett Moyer, who crossed the plate when junior Nick Ponente grounded out in the top of the fifth to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Bishops.
- Arcadia tied the game at four in the sixth inning after junior Sean Carew singled through the left side to bring in classmate Bryan Gillen, before scoring himself on a two-out Pierfy double to left center. The Bishops responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame.
- In the top of the seventh, Gillen singled to the shortstop with one out allowing freshman Evan Hurst to come home from third.
- The eighth inning explosion began with an RBI-single through the left side by Pierfy to bring in Carew. With two outs and the bases loaded, Gillen reached on a throwing error by the third baseman that cleared the base paths and allowed Gillen to advance to third. He would come home in the next at-bat when junior Luke Hohenstein singled through the left side. Hohenstein would score on a wild pitch, before Carew plated senior Nick Cardace with a single to left field.
- The Knights took a 12-9 lead to the ninth inning. The lead increased to 15-9 with consecutive RBI singles from Gillen, Hohenstein and Cardace. Hohenstein went on to score on a wild pitch before Cardace scored Arcadia's final run on a single to third by Carew.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Scarlet and Grey totaled 22 hits on the day.
- Carew led all players with a 4-6 outing that included a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
- Fulmer (3-4), Gillen (3-6), and Hohenstein (3-5) led the way at the top of the lineup.
- Gillen, Hohenstein and Pierfy each drove in two runs.
INSIDE THE HILL:
- Sophomore Andrew Scholz got the start on the mound, throwing 5.1 innings and striking out five. Classmate Mitch Blake picked up his first win of the year in relief, tossing 1.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout. Senior Ryan Ulrich threw the final two innings allowing three unearned runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
- Kevin Zullo got the start for Ohio Wesleyan, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in six innings of work. Cody Brown suffered the loss after allowing six unearned runs on three hits in 0.2 innings.
