Baseball Takes Down Nichols to End Spring Break Trip in Florida

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Senior Nick Cardace led the Knights offensively, picking up three hits, two RBIs, and scoring two runs as the Arcadia baseball team took down Nichols, 8-7, in its final game in Florida.

FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Knights advance to 7-2 on the season.
  • Nichols falls to 3-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights were quick out of the gate, plating four runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Drew Coisson led things off with a single to center. Junior Bryan Gillen was up next, as he was able to draw the walk with Coisson advancing to second. After a wild pitch, both runners advanced 90 feet, before junior Luke Hohenstein singled to center to drive Coisson in with Gillen stopping at third. Hohenstein stole second, before Cardace singled to right, driving both Gillen and Hohenstein in. Junior Sean Carew was up next, singling through the left side of the infield to advance Cardace to second. Freshman Brett Moyer was up next, reaching on a fielder's choice, as Carew was out at second and Cardace made his way to third. Junior Nick Ponente came up to bat, singling to left field driving Cardace in and moving Moyer to second.
  • The Scarlet and Grey added a run in the second as Coisson reached after being hit by a pitch, later advancing to second on a wild pitch. Gillen was due up next, drawing a walk, while Coisson stole third and advance home on a throwing error by the catcher.
  • In the third, Arcadia added another run to bolster its lead. With two outs in the inning, freshman Matt Ernst singled to second before stealing second base. Coisson returned to the plate, lining a double down the left field line to drive Ernst in.
  • After Nichols scored one in the top of the sixth, the Knights responded with two runs in the bottom half. Hohenstein singled through the left side with one away in the inning. Cardace was up next, as he singled to right center, advancing Hohenstein to third. Cardace would later steal second, before Hohenstein scored on a wild pitch with Cardace going to third. Carew was up next, hitting into a sacrifice fly as Cardace came in to score. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Hohenstein was two-for-five with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Coisson ended the game two-for-four with an RBI and two runs.
ON THE HILL:
  • Senior Jake Lloyd started the day on the mound, pitching four innings, fanning four batters, while allowing four hits.
  • Sophomore Tyler Showers gave two innings of relief work, picking up one strikeout, while allowing three hits and an earned run.
UP NEXT:
  • The Knights return to Pennsylvania as they head to Lebanon Valley for the first of two games this weekend against the Dutchmen. Saturday's game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
