Cardace Hits Go-Ahead Two-Run Home Run in Game 1, Boulanger Cruises in Game 2 as Baseball Sweeps Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team opened conference play Saturday afternoon, sweeping Lebanon Valley, 5-3 in game one, and 4-1 in game two. Senior Nick Cardace sent a go-ahead two-run home run over the fence in left center in the top of the seventh in game one, before senior Mike Boulanger cruised in a complete game in the night cap.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Knights own a 9-2 record, and start conference play at 2-0.
  • The Dutchmen sit at 3-7 on the year.
GAME ONE: ARCADIA 5, LEBANON VALLEY 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Scarlet and Grey got on the board first, when junior Luke Hohenstein crossed the plate as Cardace reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the first inning.
  • The Knights' lead increased to 3-0 in the top of the third. Cardace drove Hohenstein in with a single to left field in the third at-bat of the frame. Two batters later, freshman Brett Moyer plated sophomore Phil Pierfy with a single to center.
  • Lebanon Valley plated two in the bottom of the third and one in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at three.
  • The 3-3 score remained until the seventh inning, when Cardace sent a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left center in the inning's second at-bat.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Arcadia scored its five runs on 11 hits.
  • Pierfy went 4-4 in the game with two runs score.
  • Cardace drove in four runs, while going 2-3.
ON THE HILL:
  • Junior Joel Bartoni (2-1) picked up the win in four shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit. Sophomore Jeremy Sabathne got the start, striking out two in three innings of work.
  • Trevor Bertsch (0-1) took the loss for Lebanon Valley, allowing two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work. Arcadia got to Dutchmen starter Kyle Kingsbury with three runs on seven hits in four innings.
GAME TWO: ARCADIA 4, LEBANON VALLEY 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first three batters reached base in the top of the second inning, leading to a sac fly to right field from junior Nick Ponente to plate Cardace. Junior Sean Carew scored on the next play, when sophomore Zak Thomas was picked off.
  • Sophomore Tyler Wisnewski led off the top of the fifth with a double to center field, before scoring three batters later on a single to left center by Hohenstein. Junior Bryan Gillen crossed the dish on a wild pitch two batters later.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Cardace led the Knights by going 2-3.
  • Hohenstein and Ponente each recorded an RBI.
ON THE HILL:
  • Boulanger (2-0) tossed a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
  • Josh Marcelli (0-3) threw all seven innings for the Dutchmen, allowing four runs on six hits.
UP NEXT:
  • The Knights and Dutchmen will square off in the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
