GLENSIDE, Pa – The Arcadia baseball team completed the series sweep of Albright Saturday by taking both ends of a doubleheader; the Knights won game one 11-4, before taking game two 8-3. Home runs were aplenty, as five different players went yard Arcadia.
FOR THE RECORD:
- The Scarlet and get improved to 19-8 overall, and 10-3 in the MAC Commonwealth.
- Albright falls to 10-14 on the year, with a 4-11 conference record.
GAME 1: Arcadia 11, Albright 4
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior Nick Cardace helped the Knights overcome a two-run deficit in the top of the third with a single to the shortstop that scored juniors Sean Carew and Nick Ponente to make it. The next batter, junior Luke Hohenstein, put Arcadia up 4-2 with a two-run home run to left field.
- Junior Bryan Gillen and Carew hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the fourth inning, before Cardace came in to score courtesy of a throwing error by the shortstop.
- Up 7-4 after the fifth, the Scarlet and Grey tacked on three in the top of the sixth starting with Carew who scored as Cardace reached on an error by the second baseman. Two batters later, freshman Trevor Mattson joined the home run party with a two-run shot over the left field fence.
- Gillen singled up the middle to score Ponente for the final run in the top of the seventh.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Gillen and Carew each had two hits for the Knights, with the former driving in two runs and the latter bring in three.
- Cardace had three RBIs, while Hohenstein and Mattson each drove in two runs.
- Ponente had a double and scored twice.
ON THE HILL:
- Hohenstein (1-0) picked up the win by tossing four innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout. Sophomore Andrew Scholz got the start, allowing three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts in three innings of work.
- Daron Pijanowski (1-2) suffered the loss in 2.2 innings allowing four runs (two earned). Kyle Smith threw three innings and allowed six runs while striking out two. Zach Massari pitched 1.1 innings allowing one run.
GAME 2: Arcadia 8, Albright 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Cardace plated Gillen on a fielder's choice in the first, before Ponente sent a double deep to left center to bring in sophomore Tyler Wisnewski in the top of the second.
- Hohenstein sent his second home run of the day over the fence in center in the top of the third, this one of the two-run variety, for a 4-0 lead.
- After Albright scored a run in both the third and fourth innings, Cardace returned to belt a solo home run to left field to lead off the fifth inning. Four batters later, Ponente recorded a two-RBI single that scored Wisnewski and Hohenstein.
- Albright got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, before Hohenstein added an RBI-single that plated sophomore Phil Pierfy in the top of the sixth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Hohenstein went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, three RBIs and scored two runs.
- Cardace batted 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs while crossing the plate twice.
- Ponente slapped three of his four plate appearances and collected two RBIs.
- Wisnewski went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
ON THE HILL:
- Sophomore Rob Litchenberger (3-1) tossed four innings with four strikeouts and allowed two runs (one earned). Senior Connor Laigiae earned his fifth save save of the year by throwing three innings with four strikeouts.
- Nick Dinnocenti allowed six runs in 4.1 innings of work. Logan Adams gave up two runs (one earned) in 1.1 innings, before Ryan Kalinich tossed 1.2 scoreless innings.
NOTES:
- The two home runs hit by Hohenstein are the first two of his career. He added to his 10-game hit streak. The Stroudsburg, Pa. native also picked up the first win of his career in game one.
- Gillen has reached base safely in all 27 games this season, including 16 straight games with a hit.
UP NEXT:
- With the postponement of Sunday's doubleheader with Messiah, the Knights are back in action Wednesday at Penn State Berks. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
