Pierfy Shines on the Hill and at the Plate as Baseball Powers Past Penn State Berks

READING, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team picked up an 11-1 win over Penn State Berks Wednesday in non-conference action. Junior Phil Pierfy shined for the Knights with a 2-for-2 outing at the plate, while picking up his first collegiate win on the mound.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • The Scarlet and Grey improved to 20-8 on the year.
  • The Nittany Lions dropped to 13-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Arcadia's first two base runners reached via hit by pitches in the top of the first inning. Juniors Bryan Gillen and Sean Carew executed a double steal to provide senior Nick Cardace with opportunity to send a one-out, two-RBI single through the right side.
  • Freshman Matt Ernst plated sophomore Dylan Towey with a single to center in the top of the fourth to give the Knights a 3-1 lead.
  • Carew extended the lead with an RBI single through the left side in the third at-bat of the fifth inning, before junior Luke Hohenstein scored on a throwing error by the catcher during the next at-bat. After doubling down the left field line with two outs in the frame, Pierfy scored on a single through the left side by freshman Josh Fulmer to give the Scarlet and Grey a 6-1 lead.
  • In his first plate appearance as the designated hitter, Pierfy gave the Knights a 9-1 advantage with a three-run home run over the fence in left center in the top of the seventh.
  • Arcadia tacked on two more in the top of the ninth as sophomore Zak Thomas plated Fulmer with a triple to right center, before scoring on an Ernst single to right center one batter later.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Pierfy was 2-for-2 at the dish with a double, home run, three RBIs, two runs scored a walk and a stolen base.
  • Cardace had a 3-for-5 outing with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Carew went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Gillen swiped two bases.
ON THE HILL:
  • Pierfy (1-0) tossed four innings to pick up his first collegiate win, while surrendering one run and striking out three. Sophomore Tyler Showers and Jeremy Sabathne and seniors Mike Boualnger and Connor Laigaie combined for five scoreless innings of one-hit ball.
  • Ben Wanner (0-1) allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts for Penn State Berks. Justin Butler was tagged for three runs on five hits in 1.2 innings. Drew Skrocki tossed 1.2 scoreless innings before Chase Endy surrendered two runs on two hits in one inning of work.

  • The Knights open a three-game conference series with Hood on Friday. First pitch in Frederick is set for 3:30 p.m.
