Gillen’s Four Hits Helps Baseball Past Stevenson to Lock Up a Top Two Seed in MAC Commonwealth Championships

AMBLER, Pa. – Junior Bryan Gillen notched four hits Friday afternoon as Arcadia baseball took down Stevenson, 11-8. The win locks the Knights into a top two seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Championships.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • Arcadia moves to 24-11 overall and 14-5 in the MAC Commonwealth.
  • Stevenson dips to 17-19 on the season and 7-12 in the conference. 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After the Mustangs scored one in the first, the Knights responded in the second, scoring three runs. Freshman Matt Ernst knocked a single down the right field line to score classmate Josh Fulmer and junior Phil Pierfy. Junior Nick Ponente was up next, working a full count and driving in sophomore Tyler Wisnewski on a sac fly.
  • The Knights added two runs in the fourth, pushing the lead to 5-1. Ponente singled through the left side, plating Fulmer. As Gillen attempted to steal second, Ponente rushed in from third to score.
  • The fifth inning saw the Scarlet and Grey register another run to take a 6-1 lead. Wisnewski was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing junior Luke Hohenstein in.
  • Arcadia registered four more runs in the sixth, moving ahead 10-1. Gillen tripled to right field, driving in Ponente. Two batters later, junior Sean Carew hit a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Hohenstein and Gillen. Another two batters later, Pierfy doubled to right center, plating Carew.
  • The Knights ended the scoring in the seventh, scoring one run. Hohenstein doubled down the left field line to drive in Gillen.
  • Stevenson scored seven runs between the eighth and ninth, however the comeback fell short.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Gillen finished with four hits, two runs scored, and one RBI.
  • Pierfy and Fulmer each knocked three hits, with Pierfy scoring one and driving in a run.
  • Ponente went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in two runs.
  • Ernst picked up two RBIs on one hit.
ON THE HILL:
  • Junior Joel Bartoni (5-1) picked up the victory, pitching seven innings. He struck out seven, allowing five hits and one earned run.
  • Sophomore Mitch Blake entered in relief, going one inning, allowing four hits and five earned runs.
  • Hohenstein finished the day, pitching the final inning as he gave up two hits and two unearned runs.
UP NEXT:
  • Arcadia travels to Stevenson tomorrow to finish the season series with a double header. First game is set for 1 p.m.
