Pierfy Drives in Winning Run in 11th Inning as Baseball Defeats PSU – Harrisburg, 14-12

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Junior Phil Pierfy hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning, driving in the game winning run as Arcadia baseball moves past Penn. State – Harrisburg, 14-12, Wednesday afternoon.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • Arcadia moves to 30-13 overall.
  • Penn. State – Harrisburg falls to 31-12.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After PSU took a three-run lead into the third inning, the Scarlet and Grey responded with six unanswered heading into the bottom of the fifth, leading 6-3. Arcadia saw five runs in the third, led by a two-run homer off the bat of freshman Josh Fulmer. Fulmer also drove in the lone run in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice.
  • After the Nittany Lions tied the game in the fifth, the Knights responded with a three-run sixth inning. Senior Nick Cardace, junior Luke Hohenstein, and freshman Brett Moyer knocked in a run, putting Arcadia on top, 9-6.
  • The home squad countered with three runs in the seventh, tying the game at nine. Both teams added three runs apiece in the ninth, sending the game into extras.
  • After a scoreless 10th, the Knights plated two runs in the 11th for the eventual game winner. After Pierfy hit a sac fly, freshman Matt Ernst drove in an additional with a sacrifice bunt.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Four different Knights had a multi-hit game, with Hohenstein going 4-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Pierfy had a solid day at the plate, going 3-for-4, with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Cardace had a team high four RBIs on two hits.
  • Fulmer drove in three runs, including his two-run blast.
ON THE MOUND:
  • Sophomore Tyler Showers had the start, going four innings, striking out two.
  • Sophomore Robert Lichtenberger was the first pitcher out of the pen, throwing two innings with two punch outs.
  • Senior Ryan Ulrich was up next, pitching 2.2 innings, fanning three.
  • Hohenstein (2-0) picked up the win over 2.1 innings pitched, with one strikeout.
GAME NOTES:
  • Fulmer's home run is the first of his collegiate career. 
UP NEXT:
  • Arcadia is back in action tomorrow, rounding out its regular season schedule as it hosts the Centennial Conference Champion, Swarthmore, at Skip Wilson Field. First pitched is slated for 2:30 p.m.
