No. 11 Christopher Newport Tops Arcadia Women's Soccer

GLENSIDE, Pa. -- The 11th-ranked Christopher Newport University Captains knocked off the Arcadia women's soccer team on Wednesday at Jean Lenox West Field and Delran Pavillion.

The Knights suffered their first loss of the season and now have a record of 5-1-1. The Captains remain undefeated and sit at 4-0-0 following the 3-0 victory.

Despite the 3-0 score line, the Knights remained in the match for much of the day, generating a number of chances in the box in the second half. The Captains took 17 shots (5 on goal), to 13 for the Knights, including four on goal. Corner kicks were even at 6-6, with Arcadia getting all six of its attempts in the second half.

Riley Cook opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a PK goal following a foul on the edge of the box. Brianna Williams dove to her left and got a hand on the ball, but was unable to keep it out of the back of the net.

CNU made it 2-0 10 minutes later with Taylor Hudgins depositing a pass from Gabby Gillis past Williams.

The Knights settled down from there and limited the Captains remaining chances, while upping their own offensive intensity. Despite six shots over the final 45 minutes, and the aforementioned six corner kicks, AU was unable to get on the scoreboard. Hailey Price added CNU's third goal in the 71st minute, again assisted by Gillis, for the final margin.

IN GOAL: Williams, who was named the MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, gave up three goals and made a pair of saves. Hailey Eiser made four saves for the Captains.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: The 17 shots for the Captains tied a season-high for an AU opponent and matched the 17 that 19th-ranked Misericordia took in AU's 1-0 win on Saturday … Six corner kicks for the Knights tied the second-most taken in a game this season, while the six yielded were also the second most … Veronica Garcia took four shots for the Knights, snapping a string of three straight games without a shot, and matching a season high.

UP NEXT: The Knights next contest is Saturday against Wilkes beginning at 3 p.m., after Wednesday's originally-scheduled match at Rowan was moved to Oct. 16.
