GLENSIDE, Pa. –
Taylor Dunn scored a game-high 27 points and had four steals, but the Arcadia women's basketball team was edged, 70-68 by Lebanon Valley on Wednesday evening in Alumni Gymnasium.
The Knights fall to 6-9 on the season and 3-3 in conference play. The Dutchmen improve to 8-7 and 4-2 in MAC Commonwealth play.
Julia Makowski scored 12 points and added 11 rebounds for her third straight double-double,
Sydney Cyr scored 14 points and grabbed seven boards, and
Taylor Fritz grabbed 12 rebounds and chipped in eight points for AU in the defeat.
Makowski had a chance to tie the game in the final moments. She was fouled on a potential game-tying three-point attempt with 0.4 seconds on the clock, and was awarded three shots. After hitting the first, she missed the second and tried to intentionally miss the third to create a tip in layup, but a lane violation nullified the attempt. Lebanon Valley was awarded possession and ran out the clock to secure the victory.
Down by 12 (50-38) with 5:04 left in the third quarter, the Knights used a 10-2 run over the next 3:16 to make the game a two-point contest. The run started with a layup from Fritz, and was capped by a Dunn jumper, making the score 52-50 in favor of the Dutchmen with 52 seconds remaining in the third.
The Knights cut the Dutchmen's lead to one (54-53) after two free throws from Dunn with 52 seconds left in the period. However, the Dutchmen would score the final four points of the quarter, including a buzzer beater from half-court to take a 58-53 lead heading to the fourth.
After the Knights' deficit swelled to eight (61-53) with 8:02 left, Arcadia went on a 9-2 run to make the score a 63-62 with 3:20 remaining. Makowski hit a free throw to start the run and it was capped by a layup from Dunn.
The Dutchmen responded, stretching their lead to six after a 9-1 run of their own. Emily Mealey converted a layup, making the score 69-63 with 59 seconds remaining. The Knights were unable to tie the contest and force overtime from that point.
The Knights shot 39.3 (24-61) percent from the field in the contest. Arcadia was also 19 of 31 (.613) from the charity stripe as a team while the Dutchmen shot 56.5 percent (13-23) from the free throw line. AU out rebounded LVC 44-30 in the contest, and pulled down 17 offensive boards while holding the Dutchmen to just five offensive rebounds.
The Knights return to action on Saturday at Messiah for a 2 p.m. start.
