FREDERICK, Md. – The No. 15 Arcadia University women's soccer team clinched a MAC Commonwealth postseason berth with a
Karlie Flowers overtime game-winner in a 1-0 victory at Hood College, Saturday afternoon.
The Knights make their seventh consecutive appearance in the MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament – advancing to the finals in their last four seasons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Arcadia controlled the pace of play with a 9-2 shots advantage in the opening half. Flowers had one of Arcadia's best scoring chances on a free kick from 5-yards outside the box in the 16th minute.
- The Knights talented defense has been the team's biggest strength this season. Arcadia allowed just one shot in the second half to shut down the Blazers offense and remain on the attack. A junior back,
Jules Oswald returned to the Knights defense after missing the past six games.
-
Brianna Williams was tested early in overtime with a difficult challenge from the Blazers. The junior keeper made a leaping save to deflect Erin Scarborough's rip off the crossbar. Williams then made an aggressive dive to corral the ensuing rebound before Hood could get a foot on the loose ball.
- Following a Knights corner kick,
Mackenzie Hoffman controlled the ball inside the box and turned to find Flowers in front of the near post. The senior midfielder controlled the pass and beat the Blazers' keeper low to the far post in the 93rd minute.
- Williams earned her seventh clean sheet of the season with two saves, while Arcadia recorded their eighth team shutout.
