GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University field hockey team held a one-goal lead in the fourth quarter of Wednesday night's non-conference matchup with visiting Keystone, but a penalty stroke goal sent the contest to overtime before the Giants walked off with a 3-2, double-overtime victory. Despite allowing the game's first goal just two minutes in, the Knights rallied to take the lead behind scores from
Mickie March and
Regan Sammons in the second and third quarters. respectively.
Ashton Evans stood tall in the cage all night for Arcadia, finishing the game with ten saves on 13 shots faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Keystone came out of the gates quickly with the game's first goal on its lone shot of the quarter only 1:52 into the contest. Trailing 1-0 into the second quarter, March drew the Knights even at one-all after controlling a loose ball in front of the cage and sending it past the Keystone goalie to send the two sides to halftime knotted at one.
-Sammons broke the tie early ten minutes into the second half with a powerful strike from the top of the box to beat the goalie at the far post for her third goal of the season. The Knights clung to the one-goal lead into the fourth quarter, but a penalty stroke awarded to Keystone with ten minutes remaining in regulation culminated in a tie game that was to be decided in overtime.
-The two sides traded possession back-and-forth for much of the first overtime period as neither team was able to break through with the golden goal. With just under five minutes remaining in the first overtime, Keystone had its best chance on net in a two-on-one situation, but
Sydney Cyr came up huge with a defensive save in front of the cage to send the game to a second overtime.
-With under three minutes remaining in the second overtime, Keystone had a flurry of shots on goal and following a deflection off an Evans save, the Giants provided the golden goal to take the non-conference victory, 3-2.
