WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The third-seeded Arcadia University men's soccer team (9-9-2) saw its MAC Commonwealth Championship hopes come to an end Wednesday afternoon at third-seeded Lycoming (13-6), as the Warriors advanced to the conference title game with a 3-0 victory sealed by a pair of second-half goals. Jake Varrato was solid in net for the Knights - finishing the day with three saves - but the Knights were limited to five shots in the effort to come up short in the conference tournament semifinal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Knights and Warriors struggled to take control of the match from the ongoing as the semifinal matchup began with a majority of play taking place in the middle third. The two sides combined for just six shots in the opening half, but Lycoming's Tajhon Willis broke the scoreless tie with the game's first goal in the 20th minute.
-Varrato made a a pair of crucial saves in the opening half to hold the deficit to one, and the Knights had their best opportunity in the 42nd minute when
Harun Abdullahi made an excellent move to evade a Warrior defender and then offered to
Zac Runkle in the box, but the junior's shot on net sailed wide left.
-Aside from a second-half
Matt Berndlmaier header that was just off the mark in the second half, the Knights were largely held in check in the final 45 as Lycoming put the game away with a pair of scores in the 68th and 81st minutes, respectively.
