Softball Earns Monday Split

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Arcadia softball squad picked up a Monday split falling 4-1 to Carnegie Mellon in the morning before securing a 5-2 victory in an afternoon contest with Meredith. With the split, the Knights even their ledger at 2-2 in 2019.

Carnegie Mellon 4, Arcadia 1
Mary Pat Murray (1-1) allowed four runs (all unearned) while scattering four hits and striking out five, as the Knights were saddled with seven errors, dropping its first contest of the day to Carnegie Mellon, 4-1.

The Tartans (1-2) kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the second as Io Jette-Kouri led off with a double and advanced to third on an errant throw. Piper Johnson legged out a fielder's choice, and advanced to second on a throwing error, pushing in Jette-Kouri to take a 1-0 lead.

That score held until the fifth inning when AU knotted the score 1-1 on a solo home run to left field by Ashley Eckett to lead off the frame.

Two fielder choice's and two Knights' errors in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, led to three runs to secure the 4-1 victory for the Tartans.

The Scarlet & Grey out-hit Carnegie Mellon 5-4, with two base knocks coming from Kristin Cancelliere, who went 2 for 3 with a double. Outside of Eckett's solo home run, Jackie Bilotti (stolen base) and Alexis Burge each tallied one hit apiece.

Arcadia 5, Meredith 2
Kylee Schwind spun the ball masterfully as she went the distance, surrendering two runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts and no walks propelling the Knights to the 5-2 victory.

The Avenging Angels loaded the bases in the top of the first frame twice, but only came away with one run on a sacrifice fly by Charley Cox, plating Kelsey Mabe, who had singled to lead off the game.

AU pushed across a tally each in the bottom of the first and the second via RBI singles by Hunter Schantz (1 for 2, two walks, stolen base) and Alex DeStefano (4 for 4, two runs scored, two stolen bases) to put the Scarlet & Grey out in front, 2-1.

The Knights broke the scoring open as they took advantage of three Meredith errors, leading to three runs in the sixth. In the inning, Alexa Vardiman and Morgan Marchesani reached on back-to-back errors to begin the frame, followed by a DeStefano single two batters later to plate Vardiman. A walk to Alexis Burge forced in Marchesani and a fielding error allowed DeStefano to scamper home, putting the Knights out in front, 5-1.

Meredith strung together three hits in the top of the seventh to tack on a run, but it wasn't enough as AU came away with the 5-2 win.

Arcadia returns to the diamond Tuesday afternoon for a twin bill with Kean and William Patterson. First pitch is set for noon.
