Baseball Rolls to 9-1 Victory

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Arcadia's bats record double-digit hits as the Scarlet & Grey triumphed over Ohio Wesleyan, 9-1 Tuesday morning in Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Knights struck first as Bryan Gillen raced home on a wild pitch in the first inning, putting Arcadia up 1-0. 
 
In the second inning, the Battling Bishops took advantage of two straight walks, setting up an RBI single by Colin Spranger to take the 1-0 lead.
 
AU answered back in the third frame when Phil Pierfy (2 for 4, three RBIs, two stolen bases) roped a ball into centerfield bringing in Sean Carew (two runs scored) and Trevor Mattson from second and third, respectively, pushing the Knights out in front, 2-1.
 
After a Tyler Wisnewski bunt single in the fourth allowed Nick Ponente (3 for 4, two doubles) to score, Arcadia added three more tallies in the seventh by way of a hit by pitch, fielder's choice and capped off by a two-run single by Zak Thomas (two RBIs), increasing the Scarlet & Grey's lead to 7-1
 
A Carew infield single driving in Bryan Gillen (two walks, two runs scored, stolen base) in the eighth capped the scoring, and the win, as the Knights prevailed 8-1.
 
Carson Denham pitched seven strong innings in his first career start in the Scarlet & Grey. The freshman surrendered one run on five hits as he fanned five, picking up his first collegiate win. Nick Fossile and Mitch Blake worked the final two frames, not allowing a hit and sitting down four via strikeout.
 
Arcadia gets a day off on its Spring Break road trip before facing Swarthmore Thursday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
