Baseball Slips by Widener, 4-3

CHESTER, Pa. – Matt Ernst's bunt single in the sixth inning was the difference for Arcadia as the Knights squeezed by Widener 4-3 Saturday afternoon. The win pushes AU's win streak to five in a row and its overall record to 9-4 and 4-0 in the MAC. Widener drops to 6-11 on the season and 0-4 in conference play.

A Sean Carew infield single in the top of the first kicked things off as Bryan Gillen raced home from third, putting the Scarlet & Grey up 1-0.

The Pride responded in the bottom of the frame as Stephen DeBellis laced a double into left field and Matt Samson came in to tie the game.

After Arcadia tacked on a run in the third on a Phil Pierfy single, Widener took the lead with two runs in the fourth on a Brennan Taylor single and a fielder's choice, allowing Brandon Reis to come home.

The Pride's offense went silent for the rest of the contest as the Knights manufactured a tying run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Trevor Mattson, bringing in Dylan Towey, who singled to start the inning.

The deciding run came in the sixth as Zak Thomas led off with a single to left field. Nick Ponente grounded out to second base, moving Thomas up one station. On an 0-1 count, Ernst laid a bunt down, beating out the throw. Thomas advanced to third and came in to score on a fielding error on the play, giving Arcadia its go-ahead run.

The Scarlet & Grey banged out 12 hits, its eighth double-digit output of the season. Towey led the charge with three hits, including a double, and two runs scored. Pierfy chipped in three base knocks of his own, and Carew and Thomas tallied two hits apiece as well.

Jeremy Sabathne (3-1) earned his first collegiate complete game as he picked up the win for the Knights. The right-hander amassed 114 pitches in his 9.0 innings of work, surrendering three runs on 11 hits, while striking four.

As for the Pride, Kade Jones was saddled with the loss as he went 6.0 innings, allowing four runs (3 ER) on 11 hits. He walked one and struck out one.

Arcadia and Widener resume its three-game series Sunday as the Knight host the Pride in a doubleheader. First pitch from Skip Wilson Field for the home opener is set for 12 p.m.
