Baseball Falls on Walk-Off in Ninth

LA PLUME, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball team lost a heartbreaker, 8-7 to Keystone in the bottom of the ninth Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Knights fall to 17-9 overall, as the Giants move to 9-9 on the season.

No runs were scored until the fifth inning when Zak Thomas lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home Nick Ponente. Sean Carew followed suit with a sac fly of his own to plate Matt Ernst, giving Arcadia a 2-0 advantage.

Keystone answered with a solo home run in the fifth, a sacrifice fly in the sixth and a RBI single in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.

A Phil Pierfy two-run blast in the eighth put the Scarlet & Grey back in front at 4-3.

The Giants answered with three runs in the home half of the eighth on four hits and one error. In the frame, Keystone pushed its runs across on a fielding error and back-to-back doubles to move in front, 7-4.

Carew launched a three-run bomb down the left field line in the top of the ninth to lock the score at 7-7.

In the bottom of the ninth, Chris Panzarella led off with a double to right center. The Knights then intentionally walked pinch hitter, Chris Ammirati. Nick Carlini laid down a bunt in hopes of moving the runners, but was rewarded as an Arcadia errant throw allowed Panzarella to score the winning run.

Carew led the offensive charge for the Knights as he went 3 for 4 with four RBI, two runs scored and one walk. Piefy and Ponente each tallied two hits apiece, with Pierfy picking up two RBI and a walk as well.

For Keystone, Devin Reed recorded three hits out the lead-off spot and four Giants chipped in two hits each. R.J. Gouldsbury led his squad with two RBI.

Luke Fournier was saddled with the loss for the Knights as he recorded two outs before surrendering the deciding run. Rob Lichtenberger received the starting nod and went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

The Giants sent Jared Rowley to the bump who went 7.0 innings and let four runs score (3 ER) on eight hits and three walks to go along with three strikeouts. The win was picked up by Ramon Disla, who recorded the final two outs in the top of the ninth.

Arcadia is back on its home field on April 12 as it begins a three-game Hood. First pitch is schedule for 3:30 p.m.
