Men's Lacrosse Outlasts Widener, 9-8, in OT

GLENSIDE, Pa. -- Wesley Sporer's goal with under a minute left in overtime completed the Arcadia men's lacrosse team's 9-8 come-from-behind win over Widener on Wednesday night at Jean Lenox West Field and Delran Pavilion.

Sporer's man-up goal on the AU's second possession of the extra session gave the Knights (8-7, 3-3 MAC Commonwealth) their first win over the Pride (5-9, 3-3) in program history.

The Knights trailed 6-3 at the break, but outscored the Pride 3-0 in the third quarter then opened the scoring in the fourth to assume a 7-6 lead with 14:16 to play. Just 57 seconds into the third, Tanner Pajakinas capitalized on a Widener penalty and caught a pass from Joe Pedisich on the back post and scored easily to make it 6-4. The Knights pulled within 6-5 on JP Shaaber's unassisted effort just under two minutes later.

Nearly 11 minutes of scoreless action was ended when Josh Keitz scored unassisted with 1:22 left in the third quarter to tie the contest at 6-6. Keitz, who finished with a team-best three goals, gave AU its first lead of the game with another unassisted goal just 44 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Widener answered the AU surge with back-to-back goals from Connor Heisman to retake the lead, 8-7, with 11:25 on the clock. Brady Manion scored for the Knights with 5:24 left in regulation to tie the game at 8-8.

The Pride had the last possession of regulation, but Brendan Kuzminksi turned aside Chris Hueston's shot with two seconds left to preserve the tie and force overtime.

In overtime, the Knights won the opening faceoff but were unable to score as Clo Muscara shot wide and Josh Keitz had his shot stopped by Matt Horton. Following Keitz's shot, the Pride gained the offensive zone only to have to shots not even make it on goal as AU regained possession. The Knights earned a man-up opportunity on the ensuing possession as Widener was whistled for a hold on the clear attempt with 1:12 left and Sporer ended the contest 16 seconds later.

Brendan Kuzminski earned the win in the cage for the Knights. He came in at halftime and made 10 saves against two goals allowed in 33:04. Timmy Fyock started in the cage for Arcadia and made six saves with goals allowed. Horton made 14 saves for the Pride.

In addition to his three goals, Keitz added four ground balls and a caused turnover. Ben La Rue caused three turnover and picked up four ground balls, while Conor Cunningham won 10 of 20 faceoffs with seven ground balls. Pajakinas and Nick Crawford each caused two turnovers.
