Pitching, Hitting Leads Softball to Sweep

MADISON, N.J. – Two great pitching performances from Mary Pat Murray and Kylee Schwind propelled the Arcadia softball team to two wins over Drew Thursday afternoon. With the sweep, the Knights move to 26-10 on the season.

Arcadia 9, Drew 4
The Knights bats were alive as they smashed 10 hits on their way to a 9-4 game one victory.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Kayla Resh sacrifice fly, AU exploded for six runs on three hits and one error in the third. In the frame, Schantz cleared the bases with a three-run single that got past a Rangers outfielder, advancing Schantz to second. Up next was Burge, who followed suit with a double to bring in Schantz. A few batters later, Brooke Ward capped the scoring with a single back up the middle to plate Alexis Burge and Alexa Vardiman, pushing the Knights advantage to 7-0.

That score held until the bottom of the sixth as Drew tallied four runs on five hits and an error to cut the deficit to 7-4.

In the top of the seventh, the Scarlet & Grey added two insurance runs on a Tori Zangrilli sacrifice fly and a Bekah Good single, to secure the 9-4 win.

Jackie Bilotti led the offensive charge with three hits and two runs scored. Schantz chipped in two hits, one RBI and one run, as Ward knocked in two runs as well. Five other Knights tallied a base hit.

Murray (13-3) continued her standout junior campaign as she went the distance yet again, allowing four runs (3 ER) on eight hits with a season-high nine strikeouts.

Arcadia 9, Drew 0
Schwind one-upped Murray's outing with a stellar one of her own to guide Arcadia to a 9-0 win, and doubleheader sweep.

Schwind (10-6) earned the complete game, shutout victory as she scattered three hits and struck out nine.

The Knights gave their pitcher all the support she needed before she even stepped in the circle. In the top of the first, Burge reached on an infield throwing error, allowing Bilotti and Morgan Marchesani to score. Julia Gessner was next in the box and she roped a single up the middle to drive in Burge, giving AU an early 3-0 lead.

Arcadia added two more runs in the second as Alex DeStefano scored on an infield error and a Burge sacrifice fly brought in Marchesani for its fifth tally.

After Vardiman scored on a DeStefano single in the fifth, the Scarlet & Grey tacked on three more runs in the seventh for good measure. In the inning, Ward and DeStefano scored on errors, and Bilotti came around on a Good triple, locking in the 9-0 victory.

Ashley Eckett tallied two base hits, as eight Knights total recorded a hit. Three Knights – Bilotti, DeStefano, Marchesani – all touched home plate twice in game two. Marchesani and Vardiman also exhibited great patience at the plate as they both walked twice.

The Scarlet & Grey return to the diamond April 27 as they travel to Lebanon Valley for their last conference series of the regular season. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
