Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader

READING, Pa. – The Arcadia baseball split with Alvernia 4-5 and 6-4, respectively, Saturday afternoon at Angelica Park. With the split, the Scarlet & Grey's record sits at 24-12 overall and 14-6 in conference play.
 
Alvernia 5, Arcadia 4
The Knights rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Wolves held on for the 5-4 win.
 
Alvernia kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first on three hits, including a double and a single that scored one run each, to go ahead 2-0.
 
The Knights cut the deficit in half in the second on a Nick Ponente sacrifice fly that plated Dylan Towey.
 
The Golden Wolves extended their lead to 5-1 on a RBI single in the third and a two-run double in the fifth.
 
In the seventh, the Scarlet & Grey tried to mount a comeback as they scored three runs on three hits. In the frame, Matt Ernst and Bryan Gillen walked to set up Sean Carew. Carew singled to left field to bring around Ernst. After Phil Pierfy singled and Antony Zupito filed out, the bases were loaded for Towey with two outs. Towey singled, driving in two runs. With runners on first and third, Mattson grounded out to end the game, giving Alvernia the 5-4 victory.
 
Offensively, Carew and Pierfy brought the firepower with two hits each, as Towey knocked in two runs and scored once.
 
Jeremy Sabathne (6-3) was tagged with the loss as he went 3.0 innings and surrendered three runs on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Luke Fournier worked the remaining 3.0 frames and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks with one strikeout.
 
Arcadia 6, Alvernia 4
The Knights shook off the game one defeat and came back with a 6-4 victory to earn the split.
 
Towey picked up where he left off in the first as he hit a fly ball to centerfield deep enough to allow Gillen to trot home for the games' first run.
 
In the third, Mattson launched a three-run home run to left center to extend the Knights' lead to 4-0.
 
Alvernia cut the deficit in half to 4-2 with two runs in the fifth frame on a RBI groundout and a passed ball.
 
The Scarlet & Grey tacked on two insurance tallies in the sixth on another Towey sacrifice fly and a Mattson infield fly that dropped, allowing Carew to come home.
 
The Golden Wolves got the score to within two on a sacrifice fly in the sixth and a RBI single in the seventh, but the Knights held on for the 6-4 win.
 
Gillen and Mattson recorded two hits apiece in game two, with Gillen scoring twice and Mattson driving in four runs. Six other Knights tallied a base knock.
 
Joel Bartoni (8-1) earned the win as the went 5.0 innings and allowed two runs (0 ER) on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Mitch Blake worked the final 2.0 frames and surrendered two runs on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
 
Arcadia closes out the regular season Sunday as they finish off the three-game series with Alvernia at home. First pitch from Skip Wilson Field is set for noon.
