Baseball Drops Regular Season Finale; Secures No. 3 Seed in MAC Championships

AMBLER, Pa. – The Arcadia and Alvernia baseball teams combined for 25 runs on 34 hits over the course of almost four hours, with the Knights falling to the Golden Wolves, 14-10 Sunday afternoon. With the defeat, the Scarlet & Grey completed their regular season with an overall record of 24-15 and 14-7 in conference play.

The Golden Wolves struck for three runs in the top of the first, and the Knights responded with two tallies in the bottom of the inning, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Arcadia erupted for five runs on four hits in the second inning, chasing Alvernia's starter Jake Reese. In the inning, Sean Carew kicked off the rally with a single just inside the left field line. Phil Pierfy followed with a two-run double, plating Carew and Bryan Gillen. Anthony Zupito recorded the fourth hit of the inning to bring in Pierfy on a double. Dylan Towey capped the scoring as he sprinted home on a wild pitch, giving the Knights a 7-3 lead.

Both sides traded runs in the third and fourth frames, with the Golden Wolves taking a 10-9 advantage after five innings.

The Knights tied the ballgame at 10-10 in the sixth on a Zupito double that plated Towey.

The tie was short lived as Alvernia took the lead for good in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to go up 11-10.

In the eighth, the Golden Wolves added three insurance runs on four hits to secure the 14-10 victory.

For Arcadia, the offense supplied 12 hits led by five Knights who tallied two-hits each. Pierfy amassed the highest RBI total with three, followed by Trevor Mattson and Zuptio, who knocked in two runs apiece.

Nick Fossile (1-1) was pinned with the loss as he surrendered the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Fossile was one of five Knights' relievers to get on the bump after starter Tyler Showers only lasted 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

The Knights will now kick off the MAC Commonwealth Baseball Championship on Thursday as the No. 3 seed. Arcadia will face the No. 2 seed, Alvernia. The 2019 MAC Commonwealth Baseball Championship will be held at the York Revolutions' PEOPLEsBank Park from May 2-4.
