Field Hockey Shuts Out Swarthmore in Home Opener

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University field hockey team shut out Swarthmore College, 1-0, in its home opener on Saturday afternoon. Historically, the Knights improved their record to 9-4 versus the Garnet, while remaining undefeated at home in the series.

Carly Flickinger scored for the second straight contest, providing the Knights with their lone goal in the third period. Isabelle Houser was credited with the assist for her first of the season. A freshman goalie, Gracie Fenner had an impressive outing in her first career start. Fenner saw 12 shots and made five saves to blank the Garnet.

Flickinger put her team on the board with six minutes remaining in the third quarter. The sophomore fought for position in front of the net and connected with a one-timer from Houser. Flickinger and Lauren Dougherty led the team with four shots.

The Knights nearly found the back of the cage with seconds remaining before halftime. Following two penalty corners from Houser, Dougherty and Sydney Cyr were both denied on quality scoring attempts. Earlier in the contest, Dougherty fell within inches of a goal when she played a spinning rip just wide of the cage.

Fenner provided the Knights with clutch saves in the opening half, while the team's defense limited scoring chances in the second. The Garnet outshot the Knights 10-7 in the first half, but only managed to attempt two shots after Arcadia made halftime adjustments. The final shot total was knotted at a dozen, while the Knights held the advantage in penalty corners, 10-6.

Arcadia improved to 1-1 on the season, while Swarthmore fell to 0-2. The Knights are back in action on Wednesday at Kean University.
