GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University women's basketball team led for a majority of Saturday's Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth matchup with Lycoming, but a late, fourth-quarter charge from the visiting Warriors was enough to down the Knights, 53-50. The Knights had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer when
Julia Makowski came up with a steal on Lycoming's inbound play with four seconds remaining and raced to the three-point line for one last attempt, but her shot glanced off the rim as the Warriors escaped with the conference victory.
Makowski fell one point shy of what would have been her second-consecutive double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, while
Taylor Dunn led all scorers with 16 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Sydney Cyr got the Knights off to a fast start Saturday, draining a pair of threes in the first five minutes before the two sides ended the opening quarter tied at ten.
-Arcadia held the Warriors to just 3-for-13 from the field in the second quarter while causing five turnovers to take the advantage in the latter stages of the half. The Knights had six different scorers led by Dunn's seven and six each from
Taylor Fritz and Cyr.
-The Knights ended the half on a 7-0 run as
Taylor Fritz and
Julia Makowski converted on layups before Dunn drained her first three of the afternoon with a minute remaining to send Arcadia into the break with a seven-point lead.
-Makowski netted seven of her nine points in the third quarter alone as the Knights led by as many as seven in the period, but a 9-2 Lycoming run to begin the fourth quarter erased the deficit and gave the Warriors their first lead of the second half. Dunn's jumper drew the two sides even at 48 with 2:23 remaining, but a missed three to tie the game with seven seconds left gave Lycoming possession in the final seconds. However, Makowski came up with a huge steal on the inbounds play and raced to the three-point line, but her attempt was just off the mark as time expired.
