GLENSIDE, Pa. - The tenth-ranked Arcadia University men's volleyball team took the first set from No. 8 NYU in Thursday night's home-opener inside Alumni Gymnasium, but the Violets rallied to take the final three sets by a combined 11 points to take the top-ten matchup, 3-1.
Anthony Devantier posted a match-high 40 assists and
Jason Manley led the match with 17 kills, marking a season-high.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Knights and Violets played a tightly-contested first ten points to open the match before a 7-2 run staked the Knights to a six-point lead. After leading 19-12 in the latter stages of the first set, the Knights tore off a 5-0 run behind a pair of
Dylan Zimmerman service aces to reach set point before a Manley kill capped off the 25-14 victory.
-After the Violets took the first three points of the second set, Arcadia answered back with four-straight points to take a one-point advantage before the two sides traded points and arrived at a 16-all standoff. The Knights fell behind four at 21-17, but a pair of
Jarod Pichler kills and a Manley ace drew Arcadia within one, however, NYU took three of the final four points to draw even in the match, 25-22.
-Trailing 16-13 in the third, the Knights battled back with a 5-1 run to take an 18-17 lead powered by a
Robie Moctezuma kill and four NYU errors. The Violets answered back to take a 24-22 lead before another Moctezuma kill within one with set point looming, but an Arcadia attack error sealed the 25-23, third-set victory for the Violets.
-Neither side was able to create separation early in the fourth set with the Knights' backs against the wall and, despite kills from Pichler and
Austin Braas to keep the Knights in contention late, NYU took five of the final seven points to take the final set of the night, 25-19.
