Baseball Suffers First Loss Versus Bridgewater at Diamond Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Arcadia University baseball team suffered their first loss of the season versus Bridgewater College, 8-5, on Saturday night. The Knights rallied for four runs in the final two innings, but couldn't overcome an early deficit.

Alex Madera, Ryan Smolen and Zak Thomas each had two hits with one RBI to lead the Knights offense. Robert Lichtenberger and Trey Obarowski were responsible for driving in the team's other two runs with pinch hit knocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bridgewater took an early 2-0 lead with an unearned run in the first and second innings, respectively. However, Arcadia got one run back in the third inning off a Madera single up the middle, which plated Zachary Sekelick from second base.

- The Eagles responded in the bottom of the third with a home run to expand their lead to two runs. In the fourth inning, Bridgewater pieced together three singles to take a 4-1 advantage.

- Bridgewater scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 6-1 lead. The squad drove home their first run with back-to-back singles, then added another run on a sacrafice fly.

- Colin Bowdish tossed three scoreless innings for the Knights to keep the team within striking distance. The sophomore allowed just one hit and struck out three batters.

- In the eighth inning, Obarowski drove home Smolen with a pinch hit single to left field, which cut the Knights deficit to four runs, 6-2. However, the Eagles added two more runs in the eight to take a comfortable 8-2 lead.

- Madera reached base on a wild pitch to open the inning and later scored on an RBI double from Thomas. Lichtenberger, who entered the game as a pinch hitter, then added an RBI double of his own to bring home Thomas. After Lichtenberger advanced to third on a ground ball, Smolen brought the slugger home with a single up the middle to pull within three runs.
