HOBOKEN, NJ. - The Arcadia University men's soccer team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 1-0, with a goal in the 85th minute from
Thomas Hoy on Wednesday night. The junior beat the Ducks' keeper to the far post with a strike from outside the box for his first collegiate goal. The Knights defeated Stevens for the first time in program history, while picking up crucial points in the MAC Freedom postseason race.
Jake Varrato and the Knights defense withstood a consistent Stevens attack throughout the night without allowing a goal. Arcadia overcame a 16-4 shot disadvantage on the road to a gutsy win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights powered through a flurry of Stevens scoring chances around the 31st minute. The Ducks fired off five shots in a three minute span, but were unable to beat the Knights defense. Arcadia defenders blocked three of the shot attempts, while one hit the crossbar and the other was stopped by Varrato.
- Arcadia put together a couple scoring chances early in the second half, but were unable to connect. Hoy attempted the Knights first shot on goal of the evening with a strike in the 52nd minute. Moments later,
Daniel Tittelmayer had his attempt blocked following an Arcadia corner kick in the 58th minute.
- Hoy made his first career goal memorable with the game-winning tally in the 85th minute. The junior possessed the ball at midfield before playing a perfect touch to Tittelmayer, who was sprinting down the sideline to the corner flag. Tittelmayer made a couple defenders miss and created space while inside of the box, before playing the ball back to Hoy. The junior midfielder carried the ball a couple steps towards the box, before beating the goalkeeper with a strike to the far post from 25-yards out.
