Women’s Basketball Fends Off Penn State Abington For Season’s First Win

ABINGTON, Pa. - The Arcadia University women's basketball program held off Penn State Abington on the road Friday night, 63-62, to pick up its first win of the 2021-22 season. Mara Weaver's first career double-double led the Knights in the effort with 14 points and ten rebounds, while Julia Makowskii added a team-high 23 points on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Weaver took control of the game early for the Knights, sinking back-to-back threes in the first three-plus minutes of play in what amounted to an 11-point first quarter for the first-year. Weaver's first three sparked a 12-2 Arcadia run as the Knights raced out to a 12-point lead after one.

-Penn State Abington rebounded to keep the Arcadia offense in check in the second quarter - limiting the Knights to nine points while cutting the deficit to one at the 2:02 mark - but a 6-0 run down the stretch capped off by field goals from Makowski and Ally Zolty vaulted the Knights to a seven-point lead at the half, 31-24.

-The two sides stayed stride-for-stride with each other in a high-scoring third quarter before a Penn State Abington scoring run resulted in a 46-all tie at the 2:45 mark of the period. Makowski netted 13 points in the quarter to subside Abington's advances, but a Nittany Lion jumper in the final minute sent the two sides to the fourth quarter all square at 51.

-Penn State Abington took its first lead since the opening quarter less than two minutes into the fourth, but Holly Daveski sparked a 6-0 run to put the Knights up five with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. The Nittany Lions were able to cut the deficit to one with 1:19 left on the game clock and had one last shot at the win with half a second remaining, but the Arcadia defense stood tall an fended off a last-chance layup at the buzzer on a baseline inbound play to come away with the 63-62 victory.
