Schwind, Sooy lead Softball to Saturday Split at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Arcadia University softball program split its non-conference doubleheader at Stevenson Saturday, taking the first game 4-1 before falling in the backend of the two-game set, 4-3. Kylee Schwind was dominant in the circle to lead the Knights to the game one victory, turning in a complete-game effort in which she allowed four hits and an unearned run while striking out three for her third win of the season. Megan Sooy sparked the Arcadia offense in Saturday's opener with her second home run of the season.

The Knights narrowly pulled off the doubleheader sweep in game two by bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in the seventh, but Stevenson managed to escape unscathed despite a three-hit effort from Alex Destefano out of the leadoff spot.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Megan Sooy jump-started the Knight offense with a leadoff home run in the second inning - her second of the season - before Arcadia struck for a pair of two-out runs to round out the frame. Morgan Tripodi doubled to right-center to spark the two-out rally before a walk to Effie Jamanis set up runners on the corners. Isabella O'Hare followed with a single down the left field line to plate Tripodi before an infield error allowed Jamanis to score with the third run of the inning.

-Tripodi was again at the center of a two-out rally in the top of the third, driving in Kayla Pscolka who kept the inning alive with an infield single before coming around to score on Tripodi's base hit to right.

-Kylee Schwind turned in her best start to date of the 2021 season, going the distance for the complete-game victory while allowing an unearned run and striking out three. Schwind stranded runners in scoring position in each of her first two innings before retiring seven-straight to cap off the 4-1 victory for the Knights in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Alex Destefano got the Knights out to a fast start with a leadoff double to open game two and advanced to third on an error, allowing Madi Costigan to plate the Arcadia leadoff hitter with a ground out to take a 1-0 lead. The Knights looked to add on to their lead in the top of the third as Destefano reached with a two-out bunt single ahead of Brooke Ward who delivered with an RBI double to the gap in right-center to extend the Arcadia lead to two.

-The Stevenson offense came to life in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on five hits - including a pair of home runs - to take its first lead of the day at 3-2. The Mustangs went on to add an insurance run the following inning on a two-out, run-scoring single.

-After stranding a runner at third in the sixth, the Knights came to the plate in the seventh down 4-2 and needing a rally. Tripodi led off the frame by reaching on a two-base error and moved up to third on a Pscolka single to left, putting the tying run at first and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with one away. Jackie Zwicker plated Tripodi with a groundout to cut the deficit to two and move the pinch runner O'Hare into scoring position with two outs, but Stevenson was able to escape the jam and hold on for the 4-3 win.
