Baseball Puts up 23 Runs in Saturday Sweep of King's

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Arcadia University baseball team racked up 23 runs - nine of which came in the first inning of game one - in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of King's to begin the final weekend of MAC Freedom regular season play. Justin Massielo went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and five RBI in the 16-1 win in the opener while Jeremy Sabthne picked up the win on the mound in a complete-game effort. 

Connor Cheeseman led the offense in the 7-2 victory in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four runs driven in. Alex Madera finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 at the plate and scored four runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Knights sent 15 men to the plate in a nine-run first inning to put the game out of reach early. Trevor Mattson, Trey Obarowski, and Gregory Hamrick II all had RBI singles in the frame while King's pitchers issues four-consecutive bases loaded walks in the opening frame.

-After allowing a two-out run in the second, Jeremy Sabathne settled in to toss five-straight scoreless innings the rest of the way to while striking out three and inducing three inning-ending double plays over the course of seven strong innings. Sabathne allowed only two hits over his final four innings to pick up his second win of the season.

-Arcadia continued to pour it on six more runs in the fifth as Zachary Sekelick lined a run-scoring single to left to plate Emilio Pallante who walked to start the inning before Ryan Smolen ripped an RBI double to left. The big hit of the inning came off the bat of Justin Massielo, who launched a three-run home run to straightaway left to put the Knights up 15-1. Connor Cheeseman plated the 16th and final run of game one with a two-out RBI double to left-center to plate Alex Madera, who turned in a multi-hit performance at the plate in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Following a scoreless two frames from Luke Fournier to start game two, the Knights got on the board with a pair of runs in the second to take an early lead. Mattson led off the frame with a double to left before Joseph Kumar walked and both moved into scoring position on an infield error. Cheeseman wasted no time plating the duo with a two-run single back through the middle.

-After putting up two more runs in the third on a pair of run-scoring groundouts, Sekelick produced a two-out RBI with double to left-center. Cheeseman followed with a two-out RBI double of his own ahead of Pallante's RBI single to the gap in left-center in the bottom of the seventh as the Knights pulled away with a six-run lead at 7-1.

-Fournier ended his outing after five shutout innings, scattering three hits while striking out three to pick up his fifth win of the season. Hunter Curley took the ball the rest of the way with four strong innings to complete the sweep.
