Men’s Soccer Suffers Road Defeat at Alvernia

READING, Pa. - The Arcadia University men's soccer team fell to Alvernia University, 1-0, after surrendering an early goal in the opening 17-seconds on Saturday night.

Jake Varrato made a game-high five saves for the Knights, which included several big stops in the opening half. On the offensive side of the ball, Matt Berndlmaier attempted four shots, while Duncan O'Connor fired two at the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Alvernia struck quickly after the opening touch. The Golden Wolves made a run at the net and played the ball into the top right corner in the opening minute of action, 1-0.

- Varrato dropped to his knees to save a free kick attempt from just outside the box in the 17th minute. The Golden Wolves striker played the ball low through traffic, but the Knights senior keeper was able to corral the attempt. Moments later, Varrato intercepted a dangerous crossing pass in the box, before stopping a breakaway attempt to defuse yet another scoring opportunity.

- The Knights put together a couple of good scoring chances in the 55th minute. Following a free kick, O'Connor and Mark Hurford got off consecutive shots from inside the box, but had both attempts blocked by Alvernia defenders.

- Cannon Rosas had an opportunity for the Knights in the 72nd minute. Rosas hustled to beat the Golden Wolves keeper to a loose 50/50 ball, but had his shot attempt blocked away. Berndlmaier played the ball to Rosas across the box with an excellent feed from the left side.

- Moments later, Berndlmaier set up another scoring opportunity for the Knights when he fed the ball to Dan Tittelmayer on the left side of the box in the 79th minute. Tittelmayer connected on the pass and fired a rocket on goal, but the ball was deflected away by the Golden Wolves keeper.
