Nissley Sets New Career-High as Arcadia Men’s Volleyball Falls in Five to No. 10 NYU

Nissley Sets New Career-High as Arcadia Men's Volleyball Falls in Five to No. 10 NYU

GLENSIDE – Collin Nissley set a new career-high for kills as the Arcadia University men's volleyball team took New York University, the No. 10-ranked team in the latest NVA/AVCA Division III National Poll, to five sets but ultimately fell by a 3-2 final inside Alumni Gymnasium in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

The Knights are now 5-8 on the season.

Nissley got Arcadia on the board with the first kill of the contest. NYU reeled off three straight points to take a 4-1 lead before the two teams began jockeying for position with the Violets holding the lead, but that lead never grew by more than four points. The Knights trailed 15-11 before using an 8-1 run to take a 19-16 lead, and held the advantage the rest of the way to a 25-21 set one victory.

Arcadia jumped out to a 5-2 lead to begin set two, expanding its advantage to 10-5 before an NYU timeout. The Violets got as close as 22-20 before the Knights closed the set with a 3-1 spurt to take a two-sets-to-none lead.

Arcadia held an 8-7 lead in the third set before NYU used an 8-1 run to take a 15-9 advantage. The Knights were unable to get closer than three points the remainder of the way as the Violets cut the lead to 2-1 with a 25-20 victory.

Both teams traded points to start the fourth set with Arcadia holding a slim 10-8 lead early. With the Knights leading 14-13 NYU again went on a run, this time 5-0 to take an 18-14 lead and eventually take the fourth set 25-19, forcing a winner-take-all fifth set.

The two teams traded off the first four points but the Violets notched two straight points to go up 4-2. NYU would take a 9-5 lead before the Knights used a 5-1 run to tie the score at 10. The tally was tied at 12 with the Violets securing the next two points to reach match point but  Arcadia pulled to within one point at 14-13 before NYU got a kill for the 15th point, ending the match.

Nissley set a new career-high with 21 kills to go with nine digs. Anthony Devantier added 37 assists while Ryan Miller had 6.5 total blocks.

The Knights return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Alvernia University for a 7:00 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) match.
