Madera Stays Hot Leading Baseball to Narrow Win over Washington College
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A three-hit game fro
Alex Madera that included driving in the eventual game-winning run helped the Arcadia University baseball team to a 7-6 win over Washington College at the University of Mary Washington on Friday afternoon.
The Knights improved to 3-1 with their second consecutive victory over the Shoremen.
Washington College got the scoring started in the top of the first with a two-run home run, and increased its advantage to three runs with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third.
Nick Opalkowski singled to lead off the bottom of the third, moving to second a single by Madera.
Emilio Pallante followed with a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with no outs.
Justin Massielo got Arcadia on the board with a sacrifice fly scoring Opalkowski before
Hunter Curley followed with another sacrifice fly scoring Madera to make the score 3-2.
The Shoremen added a fourth run in the top of the fourth.
The Knights tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Connor Cheeseman led off reaching on an error that advanced him to second. After a lineout,
Joseph Kumar was hit by a pitch. Following a strikeout, Opalkowski brought home Cheeseman with a single to center, followed by an infield single from Madera that scored Kumar to tie the game at four.
The tally remained even until the top of the seventh when Washington College hit a solo homer to take a one run advantage.
Arcadia tied the score again in the bottom of the seventh after Massielo hit a one-out double to left, moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on an error.
Opalkowski gave the Knights the lead in the bottom of the eighth when hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Kumar, who led off with a walk, followed by a single to center by Madera that scored
Matt Donchez after he reached getting hit by a pitch, making the score 7-5.
The Shoremen pushed a run across in the top of the ninth but a double-play squashed a potential rally.
Owen Margolis earned his second win of the season, pitching the final two innings while allowing one run on two hits.
Zach Steiger pitched the first four innings, surrendering four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and zero walks, While
Nadell Booker allowed one run across three innings on four hits with two strikeouts. Arcadia's staff didn't allow a free pass to a batter in the contest.
Madera led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with one run scored and two rbi's. Opalkowski was 2-for-3 with one run scored and two rbi's.
The Knights return to the field on Saturday when they face Mary Washington for an 11:00 a.m. non-conference game.
